Advantages: Taste good, not expensive, no horrid additives

Disadvantages: None for me

A few weekends ago Dave and I were manning a stall selling Lifeboat souvenirs at our local theatre, Venue Cymru, where there was a Rotary Conference.

Clearly we needed to take some snacks with us to keep us going and I decided to get a packet of Mr Kipling Carrot Cake Slices amongst other things, as Dave loves carrot cake!

They currently cost £1.30 for a packet containing six slices and when I bought them a couple of weeks ago they were on off at two packs for £2.30. This particular offer has now finished but the offers on Mr Kipling cakes are a regular feature of the Tesco shelves!

There are a good variety of slices in this range including bake well slices (which I also bought), lemon slices, angel slices, country slices, chocolate slices and almond slices.

The outer container is a long slim cardboard box with a picture of one of the Carrot Cake Slices on the top together with the information that they are 'delicious moist sponge with pieces of carrot and walnut'.

On the front of the box there are the little boxes which give you the basic nutritional information per slice as a percentage of the adult recommended daily allowance.

Of course the wording also reminds us - lest we had forgotten - that the cakes are 'exceedingly tasty'! But then Mr Kipling always did make exceedingly good cakes didn't he? LOL!

On the back of the box there is a full list of ingredients, comprehensive nutritional information, allergy advice, recycling advice and the quality guarantees.

Inside the box the slices are further wrapped in three sets of two. Each pair are in a plastic tray and wrapped in cellophane - all of which I put in the recycling bag.

The little plastic trays were ideal for carrying the cakes with us to the conference and were also ideal for serving the cakes when we fancied our snack.

Each cake is about five inches long by about an inch wide and is made up of moist sponge covered with a smooth layer of white yoghurt flavoured topping decorated with a swirl of orange. Even better - there is no hydrogenated fat, artificial colours or flavours in these cakes and they are suitable for vegetarians.

As you lift each cake from the plastic container you can feel the softness of the sponge and smell the aroma of the cake and the whole thing looks and smells extremely tempting.

So now we know what they look like and what's in them what do they taste like?

The answer to that is, as you would expect, exceedingly good! The flavours and textures of the sponge and yoghurt topping mingle together in my mouth perfectly and whilst I limited myself to one slice at a time I could easily have eaten more!

The taste is sweet but not sickly, and the taste of the carrot and walnut pieces is easy to distinguish and the yoghurt topping is sweet and sticky to finish the whole thing off perfectly. Each slice is 3% carrot and 2% walnut.

The nutritional values are best expressed per slice and they aren't too scary!

Calories 139
Protein 1.2g
Carbohydrate 19.6g
Of which sugars 13.3g
Fat 6.3g
Of which saturates 2.3g
Fibre 0.5g
Salt 0.1g

So, in conclusion, the cakes tasted really nice and were just the thing to keep my blood sugar up whilst we were working hard selling souvenirs but obviously, as a diabetic, I would only ever east one at a time!

If you can resist the temptation to eat more than one these would be a great treat when dieting too at 139 calories and just over 21p per cake that's not too bad at all!

Summary: Another lovely slice from Mr Kipling
