Advantages: Delicious flavour, an unusual twist on French Fancies

Disadvantages: I can't find any more!

I found these on the reduced counter in my local Co-Op and bought them without looking, thinking it was a box of simple pink French Fancies. I had noted that the box was much more summery looking but only realised that they were in fact strawberry flavoured when I opened them and a sweet fruity scent wafted out.

I must say, these cakes are absolutely delicious and I only wish they were available all the time rather than being a Summer 2009 limited edition product.

The cakes are exactly the same in appearance to the usual French Fancies, although they are all pink in this box and drizzled with a bright white icing. As you can see from the photograph above, even the cross section of cake is identical to a pink French Fancy so you could be forgiven for being fooled into believing they taste the same too. But they don't. Oh no. These cakes are, in my opinion, even more delicious than my beloved plain French Fancies!

They are completely strawberry flavoured; the sponge tastes of strawberry, the icing taste of strawberry and so presumably does the small dome of cream atop the cake. I say presumably because so greedy was I with my cake that I didn't stop to savour the individual components and simply raced through it!

It's a tasty strawberry flavour. Not like fresh strawberries but like a very well developed strawberry sweet flavour, it's sugary and sweet enough to make my teeth ache but extremely moreish all the same. The overall taste manages to be sweet without being sickly and also strongly flavoured but also light at the same time.

The sponge cake itself is wonderfully soft, fluffy and airy. The texture is very much the same as the normal French Fancies, although I felt the sponge was that little bit softer and genuinely melted in my mouth. The cream is thick and creamy, it is a compacted cream which adds a concentrated sweetness to the cake and is delicious eaten at the same time as the sponge.

The icing that covers the whole cake is slightly thick than that used on the normal French Fancies but has the same soft and delicious texture and flavour. The strawberry flavour is very evident in the icing and for me this completes the experience of this deliciously sunny tasting cake.

I am hunting for more but since finishing this box I have been unable to find them. These cakes are definitely not available in the larger supermarkets as I've checked them all, so you'll just have to have a look round if you fancy trying them - and if anyone finds them anywhere in the South East then please do let me know as I absolutely adore them!

Summary: Absolutely delicious. What an exceedingly good idea, Mr Kipling!

They were reduced at my coop this morning too. I resisted the urge but wish I didnt now. You try approvedfood.co.uk. They sometimes have various products that aren't on the shelves in shops but there produce changes very quickly so keep checking:)
