Welcome to my quirky little review on cakes!

Ok everyone has heard of MR Kipling right? Go on of course you have he`s the guy that bakes exceedingly good cakes, You with me now? Right well of all the cakes the afore mentioned MR Kipling bakes his French fancies are without doubt the best.

A pink coloured box which inside contains a cellophane covered white cardboard tray, on the tray lays 8 beautifully coloured delicious MR Kipling French fancies. My favourite is the brown chocolate flavoured one but they are all delicious. There are three colours in total the brown chocolate flavoured one I have just mentioned, a pink fondant icing one and a yellow fondant icing one.

Because there are three colours and 8 to a box you get 3 of one colour, 3 of another and then two of the other. I personally would prefer three of the chocolate but this rarely happens it is normally three pink, three yellow and two brown.

The brown fancy is clearly advertised as chocolate flavour whilst they just say the others are fondant icing, I do not taste any particular taste to the pink one but the yellow one has a slight taste of lemon to it. I am unsure if this is just my brain associating yellow with lemon and giving my taste buds false information or if there indeed is a hint of lemon to these fancies.

A French fancy for those of you who do not know is a small square sponge cake with a small dollop of vanilla cream on top of it covered in fondant icing. Many cake makers try their hand at producing these including now a lot of supermarkets making their own brand French fancies, they really shouldn't bother!

I have tried a few other brands of these and they simply do not compare. The sponge in a MR Kipling French fancy is always moist and light but in the other brands tends to be much less so. The biggest mistake the other brands make though is in there icing, some are too runny and almost melted like where others are to crisp and the icing cracks when you bite. With MR Kipling French fancies the icing is just perfect, sort of creamy and soft but not at all melted with a harder crisp white squiggle pattern of icing on top of which ever coloured icing is used.

Is there a down side to these cakes? Well yes unfortunately there is and it's the same down side there is to all cakes and sweet treats, eat too many and you will get fat and your teeth will fall out!

Each fancy contains 105 calories, 16.7g of sugar, 2.7g of fat, 1.1g of which saturates and 0.2g of salt.

On the upside again though these cakes do not contain any hydrogenated fat or artificial colourings.

MR Kipling makes a huge range of cakes and you can almost guarantee if you have a favourite type of cake and MR Kipling makes it then his version of the cake will be the best. The French fancy is a great little cake for a snack or to stick in your kids lunch box but you really do have to take care not to start binging on these things because as I mentioned previously they are very calorific and very sweet causing weight gain and tooth decay for sure.

These French fancies along with the rest of the MR Kipling range can be found in most grocery stores and almost all supermarkets. They tend to range in price between £1.25 - £1.60 with asda quite regularly doing two for two pounds offers on them.

Treat yourself to a French fancy today!!

I wouldn't buy 'em as I would probably eat them far too quickly!
