I'd completely forgotten about the existence of Mr. Kiplings French Fancies until yesterday when my friend decided to bring a box of them into work as a treat instead of our usual Haribo fix. As soon as I set my eyes on them I was taken back to the age of 7 when no birthday party would be complete without plates of cocktail sausages, cheese and pineapple on sticks and of course French Fancies.

French fancies are mini cakes made of maderia sponge, topped with a mound of buttercream and covered in a layer of lemon, strawberry or chocolate icing. Upon opening the box you are greeted with a visual feast as I defy anyone to not be tempted by rows of little multicoloured cakes all lined up to be devoured with a cup of afternoon tea.

Unfortunately my taste for French Fancies doesn't quite live up to my childhood memories of them. Upon biting into them, the icing sort of cracked and fell off and I found the sponge to be quite dry and flavourless, the cream was okay but was also quite flavourless. I also found that, due to the dryness of the sponge, they were quite hard to eat without gulping down some liquid after every bite, even then, the sponge seemed to stay stuck to the roof of my mouth.

Needless to say the almost full pack of cakes is still laying on the side at work a whole day later!
