Advantages: Look great
Disadvantages: Too much thick icing
Mr Kipling cakes, the most well known cake-maker around, has a wide range of cakes and one of these is French Fancies. I have eaten quite a few of their other cakes before such as the mini battenburg so I thought these would be good.
They come in a large pink box with the words French Fancies written on them in dark brown swirly writing that looks like melting chocolate. There are some cakes in the background. Each one has 105 calories which is quite low but is probably because they are smaller than most. Inside is a cardboard box covered in cellophane. Each cake is individually wrapped. There are three colours: bright pink, bright yellow and dark brown. There are three of the brown and pink and just two of the yellow. I don't know whether this varies from pack to pack or not. They would certainly look very nice on a plate if they were being put out for tea for guests or something.
Each cake has a thick layer of sponge with a vanilla topping, then the cake is surrounded by icing, the brown one being chocolate flavoured. The sponge is very light and airy as promised and would certainly not be filling. The vanilla filling didn't taste of that much to me, just very artificial. It was the icing that was most noticeable being very rich and creamy, in fact too much so, I found that due to its thickness, it really overpowered the light taste of the sponge and vanilla flavour cream.
I didn't like these as much as I had anticipated. I found that the icing was just too sweet and sugary because it was so thick. Were it thinner it may have given the cake a better overall taste. They look great but don't taste it. Can't say I'd buy them again. They are roughly £1.95.
Summary: Look fancy as promised, don't taste it
