Advantages: Tasty, Nice Texture

Disadvantages: Small, Bit Over Priced

Mr Kipling French Fancies cost £1.73 for a packet of 8 cakes. Personally, I think that's a tad on the high side for a supermarket packet of cakes. You can get these freshly made in our local bakery for around 45p each, so you'd think they could mass-produce pre-packaged ones a fair bit cheaper.

The taste of these is pretty close to freshly made cakes, just not quite there. I think they're a tad on the small side though I have to say. The sponge is moist, light and very springy. This is topped off with a generous dollop of squishy cream topping. The cream is actually called a 'vanilla topping' as it's not strictly speaking cream, but it's been made to taste as close to cream as is possible.

The cakes are then coated in a fondant outer layer, which is either chocolate, pink or yellow. The chocolate fondant is chocolate flavoured of course, while the pink and yellow fondants are literally just plain fondant that's been coloured to make them attractive. It's a sweet, almost vanilla flavour on the plain ones.

As far as pre-packaged cakes go, these are tasty enough. The cream-styled filling is squishy, creamy and has a strong vanilla flavour. It's definitely my favourite part of these cakes. The fondant is a bit on the rich and sugary side, but then I quite like the compact sugar burst I get from it. The cake is just as a sponge cake should be, but nothing particularly special.

If you're looking to spend a few extra pence on something for a special afternoon tea, you're best off going to your local bakers and paying that little bit extra. But if you pick these up on offer as a tea time special, and they are frequently sold on offer, then I think you get a tasty little treat.

Summary: Great When On Offer

I don't buy these anymore as no one in my family likes the yellow ones so they always go to waste.

You should try the ones off the instore bakery in Waitrose - make these look positively meagre!
