Advantages: Delicious cakes, sweet and sugary, so pretty and fancy

Disadvantages: Way too expensive, too small - I eat them all at once!

Whenever I used to go round my grandparents' house when I was younger, it would always be filled with delicious food and drinks, like every nanny's house should be, making their grandchildren delighted. Even now when I go round there, they still have boxes and packets of goodies, which neither my nan nor my grandad ever eat themselves, but just in case any of their children or grandchildren should pop by.

Some of those which they'd have regularly at their house were a range of Mr Kipling cakes and goodies, and more often than not, one of these would be French Fancies. These have always been my favourite out of all of Mr Kipling's desserts as they are soooo yummy!

French Fancies come in a paper box and every time I am doing my weekly shop, I have to try so hard to stop myself buying them due to the gorgeous looking images of the cakes on the front. The box looks very elegant and sophisticated like all other Mr Kipling products and you know that you'll be getting wonderfully good quality food inside.

Inside, the box contains eight small square shaped cakes each individually held in a white frilly paper cake holder making them look even more well-presented. The fancies are small golden sponge cakes with a vanilla flavoured cream filling, covered in soft fondant icing. The cakes have different coloured icing - three pink, three yellow and two brown. Everyone has their favourite flavour fancy and I've found that most people's tend to be the pink cakes which are strawberry flavour. The yellow icing is lemon, and the brown is chocolate. Not too difficult to work out! The pink is very sweet and fruity, the yellow is also very sweet and slightly citrusy, and the brown simply tastes of chocolate. I suppose the chocolate is the least favourite as there are less of these in the pack. The icing is then drizzled on with a few thin lines of extra icing - chocolate on the yellow and brown, and white on the pink ones. This doesn't really add much extra taste but makes them look that little bit more fancy. The sponge is very soft and it mixes with the creamy vanilla filling and sugary icing perfectly. These need to be eaten within a couple of days of opening them (although this is never a problem in my house!) as otherwise the icing gets a bit hard and the sponge a tad dry and they don't taste as nice as when first opened.

Each individual cake contains 105 calories which isn't too bad as they are very sugary and rich but they are very small though, so a few of these and the calories add up. As with most Mr Kipling products, French Fancies are quite costly and will put you back a whopping £1.73 for just eight of the tiny little cakes. That's a ridiculous 22p per cake and when they can be eaten within two mouthfuls (one for those with big mouths), it does work out to be expensive.

If I could pick any dessert or snack up from the supermarket shelves, French Fancies would always be my first choice. They are soft, sweet, delicious and very fancy. But, because of the price, and because I'd eat them all in one go, I never buy these myself but just wait until I take a trip to my grandparents where I'll be sure to be treated with some!

Summary: Exceedingly good cakes
