Advantages: Sweet, cake and vanilla creme
Disadvantages: expensive
I have fond memories of Mr Kipling cakes and consider them to be a reliably good cake manufacturer. In particular I enjoy their French Fancies.
My husband thinks these are ridiculously sweet, but I disagree, I think they are just right and I am delighted Mr Kipling have made a GIANT version of the pink French Fancie as a birthday cake!
When you first open a box of French Fancies, you are met by eight small fondant covered sponge squares topped with a small hump of vanilla cream covered in fondant icing. There are three varieties- lemon (this has a hint of lemon taste), chocolate and the pink one- that I don't want to describe as Strawberry as it does not have a strong strawberry flavour, it is primarily pink fondant icing, but a plain sponge inside.
As there are eight cakes in a box, the colour spread seems to be hit and miss as you will end up with two of one and three of each of the others. I find these are very tasty, the sort of cake your grandma would bring out after you have all had sunday lunch but also the sort of cake I'd buy to have in the cuboard as a mid evening snack... They will appeal to all ages and tastes. And they look brilliant.
These sell for a quite expensive £1.80 for a box of eight in most supermarkets. Each cake contains only 105 calories and a surprisingly low 2.8g of fat (the same as a standard low fat yoghurt and I know which one i'd rather have!).
Summary: French Fanices are a good retro cake with only 105 calories each!
