Advantages: Look very appealing, the chocolate flavour very tasty
Disadvantages: Cakes= calories and fat
My mother is up to her old tricks again. After visiting her house this morning to drop off my parents anniversary card I was literally pounced on as soon as I had stepped through into the door and pushed into the living room and sat down. Before I knew it I had a cup of (decaf) tea thrust upon me along with some Mr Kipling French Fancies. Feeling pretty groggy and sick I humoured her as I didn't have the energy to explain I felt pretty ill and sipped my tea and decided I may as well go the whole hog and eat the cakes.
***Packaging***
Mr Kipling French Fancies come in a bright pink rectangular out box which has the red Mr Kipling branding emblazoned all over it.
Inside the box there are eight French Fancies. This is unusual for Mr Kipling products are usually there are six cake products per box. Inside the outer box is a tray with the eight French Fancies covered in cellophane for extra freshness.
***Price***
Mr Kipling French Fancies are priced around the same price as other cakes in the Mr Kipling range. Asda sell these for £1.20 and Tesco also sell for a similar price. French Fancies are also included in the 2 for £2 that Asda often offers on the Mr Kipling range.
***French Fancies***
Inside the French Fancies box there are eight cakes. French Fancies for those of you that have been living in a void are a sponge cake, with a drop of cream on the top completely covered in a fondant icing.
The Mr Kipling French French Fancies come in three colours which are brown (chocolate flavour), pink and yellow. The last two colours taste very similar and have no particular flavour although the yellow Fancies do have a hint of lemon. Within the pack of each colour you get three fancies in two of the colours and two fancies in the remaining one.
The sponge inside the fancies is very light and airy. Like all Mr Kipling cakes these are very pleasant as the sponge is moist but not soggy.
The brown chocolate French Fancies are my favourites by far. The light vanilla sponge compliments the outer chocolate icing well. The icing is very sweet but the chocolate taste is quite rich and creamy which means that this flavour is not overly sweet. The drop of cream on top of the sponge adds to the vanilla flavour and tastes very creamy.
The pink and yellow flavours taste very similar and have no real definite flavour like the brown fancy does. The sponge inside is pleasant however the outer icing is extremely sweet. The icing when chewed is very sweet and sugary and leaves a sugary coating on your teeth. I decided to have a second pink coloured fancy and found this unpleasant compared to the chocolate flavour. The cream on top of the sponge makes this coloured fancy even sweeter. After one bite of the pink coloured fancy I decided to give this to Mr Lools as it was far too sweet for me. The yellow flavour is even sweeter again as there is a hint of lemon to the flavour of the icing which I found overly sickly and hence also gave this flavour fancy to Mr Lools to finish after I had taken a bite.
Per French Fancy:
105 calories
3.4g fat
Each French Fancy is very small and not very filling so it is highly likely you will be tempted to have more than one of these cakes. Therefore these are not the healthiest of snacks so eat in moderation.
***Overall***
These are nice cakes but would certainly not be my first choice from the Mr Kipling range. The chocolate fancies are definitely the best flavour, as the pink and yellow fancies let this product down. Rather than having definitive flavours they just taste sweet and sickly. Not the best Mr Kipling products but certainly not the best.... Although they do deserve extra points as they do look so pretty.
Summary: Bite size sweet treats
