Advantages: very attractive, well-priced, nicely packed
Disadvantages: too sweet, not enough flavour, taste artificial imho
I've bought Mr Kipling's cakes for many years now & have rarely been disappointed but I have to say that his French Fancies don't do much for me & are my least favourite in the range. I still purchase them though because my daughter loves them & I bought a box yesterday for just £1 in Iceland. I'm not quite sure why they were cheaper as they're nowhere near the sell-by date but there were loads by the checkout tills (27th August).
The box is very attractive & contains 8 good-sized cakes which come in their own individual white paper case. The colours are pink, lemon & brown & each has icing piped across the top. They really do look quite special but I personally think they appear nicer than they actually taste.
The icing is very sweet yet it seems to lack taste in my opinion & I don't like the way it seems to stick to my teeth. There's a small amount of vanilla topping which tastes good but I wish it had more vanilla flavour & that there had been a bit more. The sponge is nice - not moist but not too dry - & there's a lot of it.
In my opinion these Fancies look much better than they taste. I think the combination of textures & flavours isn't quite right & I end up being disappointed when I bite into one. I'm aware that they're very popular & most people seem to love them but to me they taste artificial & far too sweet.
All the nutritional information & ingredients are listed on the reverse side of the box & Kipling state there are no artificial colours & flavours in this product although they may contain nut traces, contain wheat, gluten, egg, milk & soya so may not be suitable for everyone.
Each cake is 27.9g & contains 105 calories, 16.5g sugar & 2.8g fat ( I won't list all the values as they're on the box, but have just given an idea of what to expect for those, like me, who watch their weight). There's a long list of ingredients many of which don't make sense to me but are there if you're interested!
I will keep buying the occasional box of Fancies for may daughter or for visitors (if I don't have the time to bake) & will probably have to try one (lol) but, as stated previously, they are, unfortunately, the least favourite cakes from Mr Kipling.
Summary: look nicer than they taste
