Advantages: None for me but my boyfriend loves them
Disadvantages: Sickly sweet
The other day I went on a short hike and a picnic with my boyfriend and he told me he was bringing along a special treat for us. We had our lunch and then he brought out a box of these Mr. Kipling's French Fancies. These are one of his favourite desserts, he told me, and he couldn't wait for me to give them a try.
These come in a package of 8 fancies and there are 3 different flavours. The box is decorated with pictures that represent the fancies (although te fancies look much bigger in the pictures on the box, of course!). The three flavours of fancies are chocolate (brown), lemon (yellow), and plain (pink).
French Fancies consist of a bit of sponge cake with some kind of fluffy creamy substance on top covered in fondant icing. My overall impression of these fancies is that they are all far, far too sweet for me. I really didn't like these at all and it was a struggle to eat one of each of the three flavours - thinking ahead to the dooyoo review!
After tasting them each at great personal sacrifice to myself, here is what I found. The lemon is the nicest as the tiny hint of lemon cuts through the sugar somewhat. The chocolate tastes of very cheap chocolate so isn't very nice. The pink one tastes plain, although I had been expecting it to be strawberry-flavoured given its colouring. I suppose I can only be thankful that it wasn't as if it had been I imagine it would have been even more sickly!
All in all, if you have an extremely sweet tooth and like things that are very sugary you will probably like these. My boyfriend absolutely loves them, for example. For me I thought they were almost inedible. So I am averaging out his opinion and mine and giving these 3 stars.
You can buy a box of these for £1.74 for 8 fancies from Tesco's and they have 105 calories each. By the way, I used to live in France and never saw any cakes quite like this so I'm not sure what's so French about them!
Summary: Only for the sweetest of sweet tooths

- 05/11/09 These remind me of birthday parties when I was about 8. There was always a plate of these on the table and they always got gobbled up. The yellow were my favourite xx |

- 01/11/09 I tend to think that most of Mr Kipling's stuff is a little too sweet. Lemon sounds nicest to me, too. |
