Advantages: Delicious!

Disadvantages: Need more yellow ones!

Yes, he does make exceedingly good cakes, and none more so than the simply French Fancy. Good old Mr Kipling does it again...

The humble French Fancy is a tiny sponge cake covered in flavoured fondant icing with a vanilla cream top. The packs by Mr Kipling come in numbers of eight, with three different flavours. A simple bit of maths tells you then that the numbers do go together and unfortunately one flavour has a mere two makes compared to the others which have three. The flavours are chocolate, strawberry and lemon, and in my personal opinion that's the order of preference - starting worse and getting better. But of course, sods law means that the yellow lemon ones only have two in the box!

The style of the individual cake is almost cubed like, with a small dome on the roof where the vanilla topping sits. The icing is fashioned to replicate the flavour (lemon - yellow, strawberry = pink, chocolate = brown), with a 'squiggle' of white or black icing running across them to make them even more aesthetically pleasing.

Now, being covered in icing and full of sugar, don't expect these to be the greatest thing when it comes to a diet. Anything but! The average cake will set you back 105 calories - not horrific, but I defy anyone to just have one!!

The ingredients are as followed...

Sugar, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, GLucose Syrup, Reconstituted Egg, Reconstituted Egg White, Milk Protein, Emulsifiers (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithin), Humectant (Vegetable Glycerine), Cocoa Powder, Salt, Whey Powder, Vegetable Fat, Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Maize Starch, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Colours (Cochineal, Lutein), Flavouring, Dried Egg White.

Allergy sufferers please note that they contain milk, gluten, wheat, soya and eggs, and may also contain traces of nuts.

There are a few variations of French Fancies out there by Mr Kipling. With Halloween just gone, there were orange ones available - which I managed to pick a packet up at Sainsburys today for just 25p as they were reduced - normally a packet will cost around £1.75!! There have also been packs of purely pink fondant ones too.

But my only qualm is that being eight in a pack, the yellow fondant icing ones have to suffer and only two are in a pack...I say get rid of the chocolate ones entirely and keep it to pink and red! Oh, and anyone lucky enough to try the orange ones - I'll happily let them replace the chocolate ones instead!

Summary: Mr Kipling does it again...

I find these revoltingly sweet, but each to their own!

These are my absolute faves. I sent a request for Mr Kipling to make some limited edition lime ones. Also, have you seen the huge pink ones you can get as birthday cakes?
