Advantages: Individually wrapped, soft golden sponge with plenty of tasty milk choc chips
Disadvantages: Rather average if you're like me & don't find sponge too thrilling
I picked up a pack of these last week as my willpower was too weak to overcome the tempting photo on the wrapper.
These Choc Chip Cake Bars are produced by Mr Kipling, a company who have become extremely popular since their product first made in onto shelves back in 1967. Known for their 'exceedingly good' bakery products, Mr Kipling are a company I trust to use quality ingredients and make tasty treats.
Unlike in the photo for this product, the packaging seems to have changed to a pinky/purple design, and although they're not the most popular cakes in the range, they're available in most supermarkets.
These are sold in a pack of 5, costing around £1.25 (Asda). The outer packaging has the tempting photo of the cakes on the front so you have an idea of what to expect, and inside in a cardboard tray housing the 5 individually wrapped bars.
These are quite simply golden sponge cakes with chocolate chips embedded throughout. A simple design, which other brands have also produced (including supermarket own makes), but which Mr Kipling probably do the best.
Each cake bar is relatively small at just over an inch wide, 3" long and an inch deep (max). The shape is quite a chunky rectangle, but one which isn't smooth because the choc chips deform it slightly, making it look like they're jumping out at you to be eaten!
As these are individually wrapped, they're perfect for a snack to take out with you, lunchboxes, etc. Each bar contains 151 calories and 8.4g fat, so it's an average sweet treat and is midway between your average Kit Kat and Crunchie.
Obviously, these have a different appeal to chocolate bars but combine smooth, rich milk chocolate with the soft doughy goodness of sponge cake.
Biting into these, they are quite soft but I wouldn't say they're quite melt-in-your-mouth material. The sponge is golden in colour and has a pleasant sweet taste, with no resounding taste that can really be disliked to a great extent.
The chocolate chips are plentiful, adding a sweet taste of quality milk chocolate. They're easy to spot amongst the sponge and add a bit of a harder texture to the otherwise soft cake.
Overall, whilst I thought these are pleasant, I can't say that I'm in a great hurry to eat another one straight away. They're definitely worth a try though if you like sponge, cakes and a bit of chocolately goodness, as it's down to personal opinion on sponge in general. I'm not a big fan of sponge, which is probably why I haven't fallen in love with these, but my mother (who loves sponge cake) can't get enough of Mr Kipling Choc Chip cake bars!
Summary: A chunky cake bar made by the genuis of baked goods
