Advantages: Lemon, yummmmmm!!!!!!!

Disadvantages: High in sugar and sat fat, unhealthy

Mr Kipling are well known for being the best cake makers in Britain. Their products can be found in every supermarket and most corner shops as well because they are so popular. They have a huge selection of different cakes and pies to chose from and therefore it can often take a while to chose which one you want. I've tried a lot of Mr Kipling products but I don't eat them very often because of their main drawback which is their price. Every once in a while though they are a really nice treat. One of my favourites are Mr Kipling Lemon Slices, this is because I absolutely love Lemon flavoured cakes.

I am very happy to say that Tesco currently have a special offer on for most of the Mr Kipling range, you can currently get two boxes of these for £2.30 which is a great deal seeing as they normally cost £1.37 each so that's a saving of 44p! The offer lasts until 09/09/2008 so make sure you get some before it runs out. I bought 2 boxes today which will be gone by the morning seeing as my husband & I love them so much.

They come in a long flattish box which is mainly yellow with a little bit of red around the edges. There's a picture of 2 of the lemon slices which look delicious and a lemon and the word lemon in large letters across so you are absolutely sure you've got the right flavour. It also has the Mr Kipling logo on it and then on the back of the box are the ingredients and the nutritional values.

The ingredients, which I include for those people who suffer from allergies are:

Sugar, Wheat Flour, Partially Reconstituted Egg, Vegetable Oil, Vegatable Margarine (Vegetable Oil, Salt), Salted Butter, Reconstituted Egg White, Lemon Peel, Vegetable Fat, Humectant (Vegetable Glycerine), Soya Flour, Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Concentrated Lemon Juice, Maize Starch, Flavouring (contains Milk), Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Colour (Lutein)

Contains Eggs, Contains Gluten, Contains Milk, Contains Soya\Soybeans, Contains Wheat, Free From Artificial Colours, Free From Artificial Flavours, May Contain Nuts, Suitable for Vegetarians, No Artificial Colours or Flavours, No Hydrogenated Fat.

Each slice contains:
Calories:
120kcal, 6% of your GDA
Sugar:
14g, 16% of your GDA
Fat:
4.8g, 7% of your GDA
Saturates:
2.2g, 11% of your GDA
Salt:
0.2g, 3% of your GDA

Once you've opened the box you will see that the slices are in a clear plastic tray to keep them all separated and then the whole tray is wrapped in clear plastic so that they are kept nice and fresh. If for some strange reason you are planning on leaving half a box for a few days then you should put it into an airtight container to keep it nice and fresh, cake is horrible when stale so keep it nice and soft. You get 6 cake slices in each box so that should be enough to share, if you can bare to give them away that this.

The description of the cakes on the box says "Delicately light lemon sponge, topped off with tangy real lemon icing. A tantalisingly, tangy treat." I totally agree with this description as this is exactly how they taste. They are made from a soft yellow sponge on top of which there is white icing which has had another layer of yellow icing drizzled over the top of it. The sponge is nice and soft and light, it has a definite lemon taste to it but it isn't too overpowering. The icing on the top is nice and sweet and of just the right thickness. It provides a nice texture to bite into and has a lovely lemony taste. I think the yellow drizzled icing is mainly just there for decoration but it also has a slightly lemony taste to it which is nice.

Overall this is a great cake with a lot of tasty lemon but it isn't too strong so even those who aren't too keen on lemon should like these. They are the best lemon cake slices I have eaten and I really do recommend them as they are a great treat.

Summary: Go on, treat yourself!
