Advantages: Tastes like fresh cake, moist and delicious

Disadvantages: Slightly too sweet

After a rather unpleasant start with Mr. Kipling products (I didn't much like the French Fancies), I decided to give him another try. What prompted this latest foray into his baked products was the fact that I found a package of lemon slices in Tesco on sale for just £1. I figured these might be better than the French Fancies which were too sweet as these are flavoured with lemon. And for £1 for 6 slices of cake, it was an offer I just couldn't refuse.

Mr. Kipling Lemon Slices come in a rather brightly coloured yellow and red cardboard box featuring a drawing of a giant slice of cake. There are six slices in a box and each slice contains 120 calories. However, they are packed in sets of two and it's pretty much impossible to eat just one slice at a time - I know, I've tried.

You unwrap the cardboard box and then open the plastic the two slices are contained in and slide out the little plastic tray. This is a lot of packaging for simple slices of cake but the plastic wrap keeps them fresh and the plastic tray keeps them from getting too crushed so I'm not sure how they could be packaged any other way.

Each slice of cake is tiny but if you really stretch it out you can get about 5 bites from each one. They are lovely moist sponge cake with a slight hint of lemon covered in white icing with a yellow streak of icing across them. The flavour is slightly too sweet but not too much so as the lemon flavour does cut the sweetness to some extent. The white icing really melts in your mouth and the yellow icing adds another shot of lemon flavour to the whole experience. Best of all, the cake tastes like a freshly baked product more than a packaged, manufactured one.

I ate my slices with a granny smith apple, alternating bites, and this helped me not feel the cake was too sickly as the sourness of the apple helped cut the sugar here. If you have a real sweet tooth that won't be necessary, though.

The only thing I would wish for here was a slightly stronger lemon flavour because even though the lemon was apparent I prefer my lemon cake a bit more sour, but that's just my personal preference. I will definitely be buying these again, however, especially when they are on special offer for £1 - bargain!

Summary: My favourite Mr. Kipling product so far!
