Advantages: Tasty
Disadvantages: A bit sweet
I'm sure that most people have a weak spot for something, and unfortunately, mine is for cakes, chocolate and all the things you shouldn't really eat. I am particularly fond of Mr Kipling Lemon Slices and this is what I shall be reviewing today. Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about the Mr Kipling brand. The company itself has been around since 1967. It is a major manufacturer of cakes, including apple pies, French Fancies, Lemon Slices and mini Battenbergs to name but a few, and is renowned for the slogan, 'exceedingly good' cakes. Since its humble beginnings, the Kipling brand has established itself as a major household name, and is now the UK's biggest maker of cakes and the market leader. It is probably as popular now as it was 20 years ago and continues to grow both in size and popularity. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Now back to the review of Mr Kipling Lemon Slices...... Lemon slices are basically just lemon sponge slices topped with white lemon water icing. Each slice is covered in a neat pattern of yellow lines running diagonally over the surface of the water icing, and this serves to make them more appealing to consumers. The slices come in a mostly red and yellow box, which is both bright and attractive. It shows a sliced lemon in the left-hand corner and a picture of one of the delicious lemon slices on the right of the box. The lemon slice looks soft and crumbly, and, of course, very tempting. I particularly like the fact that there is a see-through oval window on the front of the box. This allows you to see the cakes inside, and adds to the sense of appeal. I am also impressed that individual slices are twin wrapped and placed in plastic trays, as this means that they remain fresher for longer. As soon
as you open the wrapper, the first thing that hits you is the sweetness of the slices. Although there is a vague aroma of lemon, I would have personally liked it to have been stronger. The sweetness of the icing is also quite striking when you first take a bite. It isn't particularly lemony, but it is tasty nonetheless. Again, I would have liked the icing to have been a little more piquant, but this is a minor criticism and doesn't really spoil my enjoyment of the cakes. As for the sponge base, I cannot fault this at all: it is soft, slightly moist and very crumbly, and the tiny pieces of lemon peel which are found in the sponge add to the authenticity of the slice. Each Mr Kipling Lemon Slice contains 122 calories, which might put you off eating too many at a time, but they make up for this by being quite low in fat. Each serving (1 slice) contains the following nutrition information: Energy 511kJ/122kcal Protein 1.3g Carbohydrate 18.5g Fat 4.7g Fibre 0.2g Sodium 0.1g The box clearly points out that the slices are suitable for vegetarians, but may contain traces of nuts, and other possible allergens, including egg, milk, soya and wheat. All the E numbers (E160b, E100, E161b, E475, E492) are also clearly listed. Overall, Mr Kipling Lemon Slices are very tasty and ideal as a tea time snack, but would benefit from a more tangy lemon flavour. They are, however, quite cheap to buy at only 99p for a box of 6, and are widely available in supermarkets and convenience stores. www.mrkipling.co.uk Thanks for reading. :)
