Advantages: taste, texture

Disadvantages: none

I first saw these in Tesco back at the beginning of October and resisted temptation then to buy them as I figured it was far too early to be eating Mince Pies despite my love for them. For the past few weeks I have strolled past them and showed great self control, until today. As Halloween and Bonfire night have passed us by the next thing to look forward to is Christmas. Mince Pies and Christmas go hand in hand to me and as we are now counting down to the festive season into my basket a box or two appeared.

Mr Kipling has had a bit of a revamp on their boxes this year, there is still a picture of a mince pie revealing its contents but now there's a red-gloved hand cheekily pinching one of the pies with the caption "Santa's Favourite"

We are told that these are "butter enriched fluted pastry cases deep filled with delicious mincemeat" and that each pie contains:

235 kcals
18.6g sugars
9.1g fat
3.8g saturates
0.15g salt

Opening the box you are met with the welcome sight of 6 pies in a plastic container, each pie has a slight dusting of sugar and is embossed with a Christmas tree on the top. Taking a pie from the container you notice how deep they actually are and have to be careful with the pastry as it is very crumbly and brittle.

Biting into a Mr Kipling mince pie makes me think of Christmas straight away and the sweetness of the mincemeat inside fills my mouth with flavour. Mincemeat is a funny taste now that I'm thinking of how to describe it, its fruity and sweet but also slightly savoury, you can taste sultanas and spices and together they all mix to make a mouth-watering combination.

They can be served either straight from the box cold, or, if you're like me I heat one in the microwave for a few seconds just to get the filling hot and bubbly. Hot they remind me of my grans home made ones that she used to bake and they really fill the kitchen with a rich spicy aroma. I then like to serve with ice cream or pouring cream and enjoy the experience with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

There are really too many ingredients for me to list, be assured though that the products contain no artificial colours or flavours and no hydrogenated fat (info sourced from the box) and that they are suitable for vegetarians. Allergen sufferers need to be aware that they do contain Gluten, Wheat and Barley, Milk and Sulphites and may contain nut traces.

I think you can probably guess that I'm going to award Mr Kiplings Mince Pies 5/5 Dooyoo stars, they are in my opinion the closest tasting to home baking and I absolutely adore them! There are cheaper alternatives that you can choose from and I have tried a lot of the other brands but I always find them to have not as much filling as these, so I always end up going back to Mr Kiplings.

Currently on offer at Tesco for 2 boxes for £2.00 as opposed to their regular price of £1.49 per box, they can be found on the cake aisle and also the seasonal goods aisle of all the well known supermarkets.

I love mince pies but have to make my own as I don't like any of the shop bought ones I have sampled! Ann
