Advantages: Delicious

Disadvantages: Unhealthy, can be a bit hard for your teeth

Pork scratchings, a favourite of the pub dweller and darts player alike. I myself do not play darts but most certainly have dwelled in my fair share of pubs.
On paper the idea of the pork scratching is a bizarre and somewhat puzzling one, the skin and fat of a pig, fried and smothered in salt. Doesnt sound like the most appealing snack on the market, does it? In fact it sounds like a heart attack in a pack! While I cannot refute that the latter statement is probably true, as long as you enjoy them in moderation, theres no harm in the occasional sneaky bag.

I have seen them sold in 100g bags and also in multipacks containing 5 35g bags. I would recommend buying the multipack for home consumption otherwise you might find yourself struggling. As you can imagine they can get very gaggy and too many can really make you feel ill.

Another downside is that every so often you will find a lovely fat piggy hair, with some scratchings being hairier than a Hells angels convention. Maybe these arent for the squeemish, the hairs dont bother me but then again it would take a lot more than a few hairs to put me off something so delicious.

There seems to be a good ratio between big fatty soft scratching and smaller crispier examples (i dont like too many big scratchings and find the smaller ones far more appealing). A couple of things to warn you about, firstly these things are really REALLY salty, too much salt for small children i would say. And secondly they seem to be only slightly softer than human teeth so only attempt these bad boys if youve got a strong set of nashers.

Each 35g pack contains (approx):

Calories 120
Salt 0.58g
Fat 9.14g
Protein 9.72g

A 35g pack costs between 30-50p (depending on where you buy'em)

Summary: Fried hog skin, you know you love it!!!
