Advantages: tasty, sweet, creamy, and low fat
Disadvantages: if you don't get the propotions right as you're eating it the fruit on its own can be sickly
I have to face the fact, I have a sweet tooth. I love something sweet after a meal, and it doesn't matter how full I feel after eating a main course, somehow, there is always room for 'pudding'.
Dessert doesn't always have to be a heavy pudding and custard, something light and sweet will do, and so often a yogurt just fits the bill. I have surprisingly found a low fat yogurt that does this, mullerlight strawberry layered yogurt, and they are really lovely.
The pack is similar to a regular mullerlight, apart from the pot being made of a translucent plastic, and if you're not careful, you might find yourself with a regular strawberry mullerlight, but I would recommend making sure that it says 'layered' strawberry on the lid, for a real treat.
When you take off the lid, the sight of creamy white yogurt meets you. In fact it looks like plain yogurt, and if you dip half your spoon into the yogurt, that is what you will get. You now have a several choices. You can eat the yogurt from the top down, as you would a normal yogurt, you can dip your spoon deeper, and see what happens, or you can stir the yogurt vigourously, and end up with a more normal yogurt. The secret is that lurking in the bottom of the pot, hiding beneath the innocent and pure white yogurt, is a deliciously fruity, deep coloured strawberry compote, ready to explode on your tongue with all the sweetness you desire. Personally I like to dip my teaspoon deep into the yogurt, picking up a little of the sweet fruity compote, with each spoonful of the yogurt, watching as the fruit trails pink swirls through the white. It's almost an artistic experience.
But what does it taste like, you might ask. Together, the combination of strawberry and yogurt is divine. If you get too much yogurt alone, it is like a creamy natural yogurt, but that's something I'm not too fond of on its own. If you get too much of the compote, even though I have a sweet tooth, I do find this a little too sweet. The combination of the two is just right however, and very enjoyable.
Most low fat yogurts have around 50-70 calories per pot, and if you read the information on the label, you might think this was comparable, but one thing you have to be careful of, is that muller layers (and regular mullerlight) are larger pots than normal. The nutritional information they give you is for 100g of yogurt, which is usually what a standard yogurt pot has, but these are 175g, which is almost twice as much. It still doesn't make them calorie laden though, as the whole pot only has about 91 calories.

All in all, for me this is the perfect dessert when I'm looking for a healthy option, but need something sweet to satisfy that craving. Gets 4 stars from me. (Can't give it 5 it isn't chocolate!)

- 18/12/08 I prefer organic yoghurt which I then add fruit to rather than pre made ones. |
