Advantages: Creamy yummy dessert

Disadvantages: None

I am a lover of Muller Lights, Fruit Corners and most of the other yogurts in the Muller range. I have had Muller Rice in the past and noticed a new flavour called Muller Rice - Vanilla Custard on a recent trip to the supermarket. Being a big fan of custard this really appealed to me and so I picked a couple up and put them in my already bulging basket!

PACKAGING

The pot this comes in is the same shape and size as the Muller Light pot. It is 200g and has the same distinctive Red and White Muller logo. The colouring of the pot for this particular flavour is yellow and white. Its not quite as good for you as the Lights, although it does claim to be 'low fat' on the packaging. It also has no artificial colours or preservatives and provides 20% of the recommended allowance of Calcium. The side of the pot details all the ingredients and nutritional information and the heating instructions.

SERVING

The rice can be eaten either hot or cold. To eat cold simply remove the lid and dig in! If like me you prefer rice pudding hot then it can be heated up in the microwave. Using a 650W microwave it should take 90 seconds on full power. The dessert should be stirred halfway through the time. As my microwave is 850W I usually heat up for just over a minute to get the desired temperature. I find that if I heat it for any longer then it is too hot to eat immediately and I have to leave for a couple of minutes to cool back down again. It can also bubble over and make an almighty mess of your microwave if you don't keep your eye on it. Care should be taken when removing the foil lid to ensure that no bits are left behind before placing in the microwave. There are warnings to this effect on the packaging.

YUMMY!

I have eaten these both hot and cold. The majority of the dessert is rice with a layer of custard at the bottom of the pot. If you eat the dessert cold then the two tastes can be kept separate to a degree. If you heat it up then the two parts become mixed up when stirring halfway through cooking. (If you don't do this then it may not be heated to the same level all the way through). When the pack is first opened the consistency of the dessert is quite thick and creamy, very similar to Ambrosia Creamed Rice. After heating it takes on a slightly runnier thinner consistency but is still creamy.

The smell that hits you the most is the sweet smell of custard. The pudding is creamy with small lumps of rice and tastes primarily of rice pudding. This intermingles surprisingly well with the sweet custard which makes the texture smoother and the dessert slides easily down the throat. The custard portion is a pale yellow colour and the rice an off white colour.

After eating I always feel quite satisfied. Like all good puddings it leaves you feeling full up and I would say the portion is exactly the right size.

PRICE AND AVAILABILTY

The RRP for these tends to be just over 50p each. They are often on offer in supermarkets as part of a deal on multiple buys. Muller Rice can also be bought in multipacks of the original and snack size. At the moment though this flavour does not seem to be available as part of these packs.

MULLER

As well as Vanilla Custard, Muller Rice is also available in original flavour, apple, strawberry, blueberry, Cherry, Raspberry and Rhubarb.

For more information about the other products in the Muller range then look at the website :

www.muller.co.uk

The website also gives history of the company from its founder Ludwig Muller in 1896 through to the present day. There are also details of recipes to use with Muller products and eating and active lifestyle tips.

SUMMARY

Since I first spotted this flavour in the supermarket a few weeks ago I have bought several more of these. I enjoy them after a meal and also as a snack in their own right.

For anyone who likes rice pudding, custard or preferably both then I would thoroughly recommend this product. If you are not a big custard fan then I have tried the original, apple and strawberry flavours in the past and found them all enjoyable.

Summary: Pop one in the microwave and tuck in!
