Advantages: Cheap, tasty not too sweet and fills a small gap

Disadvantages: Stodgy rice and odd custard!

I do like a nice pudding. Call it dessert or anything you desire but I like them. I'm not a major sweet gal but rice puddings and a nice yogurt will always be appreciated by my tummy.

The worse thing you can ever do is go shopping when feeling a bit peckish. Today at Tesco's was one of them days for me. I'd been out shopping for some Christmas presents (thought I'd better make a start lol) and cos I'd been out ages I ended up buying some stuff to walk around eating to make my belly stop growling at me (which it does more now than before I quit smoking I hasten to add!) and a few treats to bring home for a night in front of the tv whilst I'm watching my beloved Top Gear (yes really lol).

I spotted some Muller products on offer and this was at the special price of 27p a pot I think the price you can usually expect to pay is around the 54p mark.

I opted for this because I loved the thought of rice and custard and this can be eaten hot or cold!

The Packaging....

A 200g white and yellow roundish plastic recyclable pot with a foil peel off lid at the top. On the foil lid I'm told it's Muller and then that's it's Vanilla Custard Rice. The use by date is stamped on in black ink and I'm told that it is low in fat, that it contains no artificial colours or preservatives and contains 20% of your recommended Calcium allowance. On the pot itself I'm once (or twice!) again told the brand and what it is and this time it's spelt out that it is 'Creamy Dairy Rice With Vanilla Custard Sauce'. Then I'm told the ingredients, nutritional information is given, I'm told I can eat it hot or cold and given heating instructions, size is stated once again (as I've listed already) the website is given as well (www.muller.co.uk) and there is finally a bar-code. The pot doesn't scream buy me but it's ok!

To Heat....

Carefully remove the foil lid. Heat on full power for 90 seconds, stirring half way (650 watt microwave).

Well I have had other Muller products in the same vain as this before and me, well I know I prefer them cold so I ate mine cold of course.

I peeled of the lid and was met with a a rather thick and stodgy looking rice with no fragrance to it and I had expected some as this contained vanilla. Thick it was and rather set but hey I'm not complaining that's the way I like my rice.

Muller rice is never as creamy as I'd like it to be but it redeems itself by not being far too sweet and sticky. The rice is thick and the sauce it is in is thick. I forgot all about the custard so when I got to it I was a bit surprised to be honest and pleased cos up to this point I just thought I was eating plain rice!

There is a thick layer of sauce which had I have thought about I would have mixed it into my rice which was sat at the bottom of my pot. It's not a rich creamy yellow it's actually a bit slimy looking and has a hint of green in the colour rather than the usual yellow custard colour I'm so usually familiar with. However it tasted nice enough. There was a hint of vanilla that the rice doesn't actually contain so the flavours are all rather separate and the custard once again isn't overly sweet but really to be honest it just isn't much like custard. Though it all tastes nice enough it was all just a bit of a let down really. The rice isn't creamy enough and the custard...well isn't all that custardy with it's slimy texture that's hard to mix in but don't get me wrong it isn't unpleasant it's ok! Probably best heated and stirred!
