Advantages: Filling and tasty. Not as bad for you as a chocolate bar.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive. Not as good for you as a piece of fruit.
I'm a complete lazy bones and would always opt for an extra 15 minutes in bed on a morning over making myself a bowl of cereal and having the time to eat it (especially when I have to haul myself out extra early to dig in the snow to locate the car, like this morning!). So a little while ago I hit upon the idea of Muller Rice as a sort of breakfast-on-the-go for when I get to work - they're easy to pop in your handbag after all and are sort of milky and breakfasty, and are made up of rice so I find they fill me up a lot better than yoghurt would. I find bringing them into work from home works for me because by the time I come to eat it it's not straight out of the fridge and freezing cold, but, at the risk of sounding like Goldilocks, just right.
The Muller Rices come in the classic Muller upside-down bell shaped pot, a bit bigger than most yoghurts or desserts at 200g. The pot for the Vanilla Custard flavour is predominantly yellow to reflect the custard, with an image of the rice pud on the foil lid.
Muller Rices, like most Muller products, usually retail at about 54p each, although they can often be found on offer for 4 for £2, and less commonly, 4 or 5 for £1. When I spot a bargainous offer like this I tend to stock up for the next few weeks as the Best Before date is usually quite long on them. For example, the ones I bought yesterday (1 Feb) will last til 28 February so that's four weeks.
The pudding itself has a very thick creamy consistency which becomes less so upon stirring. I always give it a stir to start with anyway as the vanilla custard is all in the bottom of the pot and needs mixing in. The vanilla custard is very sweet which is perfect for a sweet tooth like mine, though it is still possible to identify the underlying rice pudding taste, which is just how I remember it from childhood. Muller Rices can be eaten cold or warmed up in a microwave for a minute and a half (after removing the foil lid!!!)
At 115 calories per pot, the vanilla custard flavour is a bit worse for you I think than the fruit varieties, but still not too bad - and better than the average chocolate bar. It still contains less than 3% fat and is thus counted as a low fat product. It also provides you with 20% of your day's calcium and contains no artificial colours or preservatives. I won't bore you with the full inventory of ingredients and nutritional information as this can be found here: http://www.muller.co.uk/ (and the website is worth a visit for the pop-up cows alone), though I will mention that it is suitable for vegetarians.
Summary: A tasty little snack-in-a-pot!
