Advantages: May actually be good for you
Disadvantages: none that I can think of
Shopping in my local supermarket I came to the yoghurt section and after being constantly bombarded by TV adverts for various different pre & probiotic drinks and good bacteria I thought I would give them a go.
Having scanned the shelves I was horrified at the price of some of these drinks that are available, and believe me everyone seems to have jumped onto this band wagon, I spotted the Muller range (currently on offer in my local ASDA with a 6 pack for £1.00) which seemed to be the best in price even at the full price. The only choice I had to make now was which flavour.
Muller have the following flavours available (at least these where the ones available in my local ADSA) - Strawberry, Rasberry,Orange and Vanilla, I plummed for Vanilla.
What does the bottle look like - well quite a sexy little number with a flat bottom, goes in at the waist, broad shoulders and a lipped top. The lid is a peel back foil seal which is easy to do so, unlike some others where you end up with half of the lid still attached and splattered with yoghurt.
For this particular flavour the main colour used is a pale blue fading into a white background at the bottom of the bottle which has a picture of a vanilla pod on it . This bits of nutritional info to the right hand side (face on to the bottle) stating: Low in Fat, pre & probiotic and no artificial colours or flavouring, this not very obvious, however, on the left hand side of the bottle and lovely red print is 'omega 3'.
Consistancy
Looks thick and creamy as you would expect from Muller but can make it swirl around a bit when rotating the bottle. If you pour it into a glass it actually clings to the sides like a thick milk shake.
Smell - pleasant with a faint hint of plastic from the bottle but it is not off putting (yes I am sitting here sniffing a plastic bottle looking slightly crazy).
Taste
well here goes - actually very nice - not too overpowering on the vanilla and tastes different to the muller light vanilla yoghurt pots, very smooth and not too think so pours like a drink. Probabley best to describe this a cross between milk and muller yoghurt also not too sweet or sickly.
Now for the nutrition bit
Contains pre & pro biotic what are these I hear you cry
Well done a bit of research and have found out the following:-
Probiotics are "dietary supplement containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast and are intended to assist the body's naturally occuring flora in the digestive tract to re-establish themselves" There is no published evidence that probiotic supplements are able to replace the body's natural flora when these have been killed off.
So what is Omega 3
Well its not a star system or a new planet but a fish oil, yes I know not that interesting but apparently its supposed to be good for you by reducing the risk of heart disease though there is still a lot of debate out whether it works or not within the medical community and I would much prefer to have this included in a drink than have a spoon full of fish oil anyday.
So why to we buy these items: - the power of advertising and also that there are a range of potential benefits which the main three are:
Prevention of Colon Cancer
Cholestoral Lowering
Lowering Blood pressure
Reducing risk of heart disease
Prebiotic means pretty much the same as probiotic.
For the ingredients the main item listed is yoghurt closely followed by sugar which I found surprising with this flavour as not that sweet. The ingredients and the nutritional details are hard to read as the bottle is only approx 10cms high and there is alot of info squashed on there.
Would I buy this again? Yes, tastes nice and may actually be good for you.
Summary: A more purse friendly yogurt drink with pre & pro biotics and Omega 3

- 21/03/08 I tend to look out for special offers, full price is astronomical ! |

- 21/03/08 A pre-biotic is a food for the pro-biotic to feed off - and I love the drinks. Especially the vanilla! |
