Advantages: Minty chocolate, yum!
Disadvantages: Not as nice as the original.
I am a huge chocoholic, getting through a day without a single morsel of chocolate passing my lips is a momentous occasion for me. Minty chocolate is my absolute favorite, it has been known for me to 'accidentally' eat the box of After Eights especially bought for Christmas Lunch by the second week of December and then 'accidentally' eat the replacement box by the third week. Ooops!
Anyway, you can imagine how happy I was to see that Nestle have made an After Eight 80gram bar. I purchased my bar from my local Co-op for £1.19 which I thought was about average for the size. I have researched a bit and found that Tesco's, Sainsbury's and Woolworths sell at this price, but Asda had it for £1.
I set the scene, i.e. made sure my son was tucked up in bed, husband was out watching the footie, (I couldn't share it, I had to make sure I tried enough to write a fair review) and put my favorite programmes on.
The wrapping is classic After Eight, sophisticated dark green and very thick, also there was a layer of gold foil underneath, making it feel extra indulgent! The bar is sectioned into eight squares, each measuring a little less than about 4x4cm and 6mm in depth. The problem is that the chocolate is 70% cocoa solids and whilst this makes it very smooth and slightly bitter (perfect for mint fondant) it also makes it quite hard, even at room temperature. The squares do not break along the lines and this means some of the mint filling is wasted and can be messy. The mint flavoured fondant is just as nice as in the originals, slightly gooey, very sweet and with the lovely taste of peppermint oil. There isn't much filling though, so wastage is very upsetting. The edges of the bar are a bit too thick, unlike the original squares which are wafer thin the whole way around. There is definitely more chocolate than fondant. This makes the bar too rich for my taste (and bear in mind, I can eat a whole 200gram box of the originals before feeling queasy).
After this experience, I have decided that next time I will stick to the good old originals. There are a lot more in the boxes (24 wafers in a 200gram box), they can always be kept for later and represent much better value. I have found that Tesco, Sainsbury, the Co-op & Woolworths sell a 300gram box for £2.39. Also, I love the little envelopes!
Before I go, I thought I'd share some interesting facts I learnt while researching this review:
After Eights were launched in 1962 by Rowntree's. Nestle Bought Rowntree plc in 1988. After Eight brand products are exported to more than 60 countries.
If a years production of After Eights were laid flat, they would cover an area equivalent to 328 football pitches.
Here are the ingredients and some nutrition information incase you want to try for yourself:
Cocoa mass, sugar, invert sugar syrup, cocoa butter, glucose syrup, flavourings, emulsifier (soya lecithin).
May contain traces of peanuts, nuts, eggs, milk, gluten & sesame.
There are 99 Kcal, 6.4g of fat (4.0g of which are saturates) in a quarter of a bar, but then you wouldn't be eating it if you were on a diet (would you?).
