Advantages: Tastes scrummy!

Disadvantages: Calories, & lots of 'em!

There used to be a time when After Eight mints were for special occasions only...more to the point, Christmas only...

This was because they came in a box, not a wrapper - a box. And they weren't just thrown into said box, no - they came individually wrapped. This gave After Eight mints a high status which meant they were off limits as an everyday chocolate...

But wait! After Eight can now be enjoyed outside of festive seasons, because it now comes.....drumroll!....

......in a bar....!!!

I first spotted these down the confectionary aisle in Tesco a few months ago and they have now become a regular feature of the weekly shop.

Regular After Eights as we know them are thin squares of thin dark chocolate, housing a mint fondant. The bar follows the same principle - it's only thin, but the chocolate is much thicker in order to maintain the bar shape. Individual squares mean the bar can be broken & shared, but often doesn't break easily, leaving a minty trail behind. They are delicious, perhaps even more so than the boxed variant, since there's more choccie to be enjoyed....

The bars are quite small at 80g (because of the thickness, or should I say thin-ness?!), & currently cost 86p at Tesco (price @ June 2009). At this price it's quite reasonable to indulge in the odd one now & again, rather than having to splash out a couple of quid or so on a box of the scrummy individual squares.

Try one - go on, it's Christmas! (or not....)

Summary: A cheap way to get a little bit of After 8 in your life..

I do feel like part of the wonderfulness that is After Eight comes from associating it with Christmas. Perhaps a little Christmas in summer is a good thing.
