Advantages: Delicious and nutritious .
Disadvantages: Not a lot!
You could never accuse me of being the healthiest eater in the world. I'm too fond of the old frying pan, and like nothing better than sitting down of a morning and eating a good, old-fashioned fry up for my breakfast.
Rashers, (the Irish name for bacon) sausages, black pudding, eggs, mushrooms, and fried bread, all liberally salted and with a dash of HP sauce is my idea of breakfast heaven. Throw in lashings of hot, thickly buttered toast, and about three mugs of strong, sweet, Kenco Columbian coffee, (see my review) and I'm set up perfectly for the day ahead.
But every now and again time doesn't allow for the leisurely breakfast that I enjoy so much, and I have to resort to toast and cereal. Up until recently, my breakfast cereal of choice would have been either Weetabix or Cornflakes. But now I have found another cereal that I thoroughly enjoy.
It's Cheerios, the breakfast cereal made out of four different types of grain, and manufactured by Nestle. Well, I say "breakfast" cereal, but in actual fact I've been going through a phase of also having a nice big bowl of this delicious cereal if I happen to get a wee bit peckish of an evening. Just the job, so it is, for keeping the old hunger pangs at bay! Mind you, I must wander around in a daze half the time, because in fact Cheerios have been on the scene since away back in 1941, when I wasn't even a twinkle in my daddy's eye.
Well, I hear you ask, what exactly are Cheerios, and what makes them so tasty? (OK. Maybe I DIDN'T hear you ask, but I'm gonna tell you anyways, heh, heh)
Cheerios are made out of four different types of grain, and come in different coloured little circles of pure goodness. The four grains used are corn, oats, wheat and rice. (The different colours are a result of the different types of grain) According to the bumph on the back of the box, up to 90% of us (that's an AWFUL lot of people!) aren't eating our recommended intake of whole grain on a daily basis, which is doing us all kinds of untold harm. Now I don't know how much actual truth is in this, but whatever good Cheerios do you, they certainly won't do you any harm.
Supposedly they are good for reducing cholesterol levels, (the only cereal that can achieve this seemingly!) and for helping to keep our hearts healthy. They increase your fibre intake, and also help to keep your stomach and bowels in good nick.
To be perfectly frank, a lot of this goes right over the top of my head, but I suppose that it's a comforting thought that you are actually eating something that is doing you some good for a change, while at the same time thoroughly enjoying it.
There's no preparation in Cheerios, which is why they are ideal for breakfast when I'm in a hurry. Simply add milk and sugar to taste, and off you go.
Cheerios come in two sizes. The smaller 375g box currently costs around Euro3.00, and the larger 600g box Euro4.60. (Irish prices. Shop around.)
Very tasty, very good for you, and highly recommended.
