Advantages: Good for you, yummy and good value for money
Disadvantages: Slightly soggy if they sit in milk too long
I was sitting at my laptop eating Cheerios (yes, just the basic plain kind) directly out of the box while catching up on some dooyoo reviews when it dawned on me that I should probably write one!
Cheerios have been around since the 1940s and have been eaten by me from the time I was in a high chair. There is a sense of nostalgia in eating a bowl of cheerios and the knowledge that somewhere my mother approves of my choice of cereal after years of rebelling with breakfast choices that turned milk a wide range of questionable colours. Cheerios do not need a fluorescent coloured cartoon character in order to sell. They've remained popular for over 60 years because they are a high quality product and are reasonably priced.
Made of four types of grains, Nestle are happy to tell you that a bowl of Cheerios provide you with 1 of your daily whole grain servings. My husband who is a compulsive reader of nutritional information on packages approves of Cheerios and that's enough for me from a health point of view. The round pieces of cereal are not artificially coloured. They range in colour from pale beige to dark brown reflecting the grains from with they are made: corn, rice, wheat and oats. It feels good to know that you're putting something into your body that is good for it. However, they are not bland. In fact, having put a dry mouthful in this morning I had to check the box to be sure we'd bought the correct type. They seem sweeter and more flavourful than when I was a child.
The real joy of Cheerios is the delightful crunch they make when eaten dry or with milk. Yes, after awhile they get a little soggy, so don't dawdle over your breakfast! Cheerios keep their freshness well compared to cereals that contain flakes, but do make sure you close up the box properly; there's a convenient little tab there for that.
Summary: Have a proper breakfast.
