Advantages: tastes great

Disadvantages: none really

Fab lollies have been around for over 40 years and I remember eating them as a child just as my own son does now. They were first marketed in 1967 by Nestle and the only thing that has changed about these lollies is that previously the centre was more 'jelly' like whereas nowadays its a strawberry ice centre.

I have just researched these lollies on Wikipedia and have just found out they were originally designed for girls between the ages of 5-15 and the name Fab was used in relation to the car Penelope Pitstop drove 'FAB1'. How interesting lol!!

Anyway, back to the lolly itself. As with all other lollipops it is a rectangular shape on a small wooden stick. The Fab is made up of 3 different parts. The bottom layer is Strawberry Fruit Ice, middle bit is vanilla ice-cream and the top is dipped in chocolate and covered in hundreds and thousands so theres something for everyone in these lollies!!

Nestle now do Fabs in an orange flavour and for a while there was also a limited edition lemon flavour, though I haven't seen any of the lemon ones around for a long time but the orange ones can always be found on the supermarket shelves.

Fabs generally come in boxes of 8 and can quite often be found on offer for £1.00 per box in places like Tescos which I think is really good value for money since you will pay around 70p for just one from the ice-cream vans. Usual cost for a box of 8 when not on offer is £1.99 making them around 25p per lolly so still not a bad price. The orange version is the same price.

In my opinion these lollies are great for both adults and children. Children love the different colours and tastes that come with this lolly but I know a few adults that are partial to them too!! The top layer of chocolate and 'bits' is the first layer you bite into (if you can!). The milk chocolate 'cracks' as as soon as you bite into it and has a really nice Nestle flavour to it. Its certainly not cheap, nasty chocolate and tastes really good.

As with anything else that contains hundreds and thousands you find it can be a bit messy as they can break away from the lolly when bitten into so cream furniture and children eating Fabs should probably be kept apart!! The vanilla ice-cream is light, yet filling and flavoursome but not overpowering. The strawberry fruit part has the same feel. You get a lovely smooth strawberry taste but again not too over the top but has a nice crunch to it too. The middle section of ice-cream is the only real 'non crunchy' section to this ice-lolly but I believe all 3 parts work together well and compliment each other giving you a great tasting lolly.

Each lolly is 58ml and contains 79 calories, 12.5g sugar, 2.7g fat, 0.9g saturates and a trace of salt. Obviously not a healthy snack but the whole idea of ice-lollys is that they are used as an occasional treat and not as a daily snack between meals so whats the harm!!

In summary I have to say I am still as partial to one of these as I was all those years ago as a child. I have personally never tried the orange version but my son has and his opinion was that they were ok but not as good as the original strawberry version so we'll be sticking to that one.

All in all a great ice-lolly which tastes 'Fab' (sorry, couldn't resist!!) and the fact that it has already been around for 40 years shows its popularity so I can see it being around for another good 40 years yet. Love them!!

Summary: A must try lolly!!
