Advantages: Great tasting bar

Disadvantages: Bit expensive for an everyday treat

***Background***

The reason I ended up tasting this cereal bar was quite simply because it was a free sample that I received the other day. I tend to back away from bars such as this because I find that they tend to have a bit of a cardboard texture and I hadn’t found one that I found tasty – that is until now.

The well-known company of Nestle makes the Fitnesse Chocolate bar. Now like the company or not, they are very successful and I have to admit I buy a lot of their cereals for the kids because they are made from the whole grain as well as being very tasty. My son loves to eat dry cereal as a snack so anything that gives him a bit of extra vitamins etc is a welcome change from the normal childhood snack these days of sweets or crisps.

This cereal bar originates from a cereal too, which is available in multigrain form or with honey and nuts.

***The Bar & It’s Packaging***

I got a single bar of this but it is available in packs of 6 of this 23.5g bar. It is around 5 inches long and around half an inch tall. It comes in a foil wrapper to help it stay fresh and has an attractive design showing chocolate chunks on one side and a picture of the cereal bar on the other. In the middle it advertises that this bar only contains 90 calories, which is quite eye-catching for anyone who wants a bit of a snack but doesn’t want a high calorie content to go with it. Most biscuits or snack size versions of bigger bars have at least 120 calories so it’s quite a different for those counting the calories.

The wrapper is easy to open and the smell of chocolate does hit you in a pleasant way. The bar doesn’t really look that appetising to be honest but it has a layer of chocolate on the underside, the cereal bits held together with syrup in the middle and chocolate chips generously scattered on the top of the bar.

***The Taste***

Biting into this bar I wasn’t prepared for the lovely taste it would have. The cereal is a strange mix of being chewy in the syrup but also crunchy too. There isn’t a lot of chocolate on the bottom layer but it’s enough to add a bit of flavour to this healthier option and is a must for any chocoholics like myself.

You can definitely pick out the flavour of the wheat and rice in this bar and the dark chocolate chips are nice to nibble on – I have to admit to picking a couple off to eat on their own.

***The Contents***

I won’t bore you with a list of ingredients but the cereal grains make up 42% of this bar and the chocolate makes up 15%. Also included in just one 23.5g bar is 20% of the recommended daily dose of 8 vitamins including Vitamin E, B1, 2, 6 & 12 as well as Folic Acid and Calcium. Also included is a 10% RDA of iron. So all in all if you don’t have time to eat a healthy breakfast then this could be a good supplement to your day.

***Other Varieties***

Original
Chocolate and Orange
Chocolate and Raspberry
Strawberry

***Price***

For the pack of 6 of the original variety you’ll pay around 90p and for the flavoured bars you can pay around £1.80.

***My Thoughts***

This healthier bar does actually do it for me. The taste is a lot more pleasant than some of the other bars I’ve tried and for a freebie it was excellent value. I do think that it’s quite expensive to pay about 30p for a bar such as this but I will be looking out in the supermarkets for any special offers in the future. I do realise that this is about an average price for a cereal bar with extras in it though.

What I liked about it was the mixture of crunchy and chewy bits in it. You can really taste the brown sugar that is used to help make the syrup and this helps give it the sweetness that you associate with more sumptuous snacks. The thin layer of chocolate was just enough to deal with my cravings and the little chips on top were just scrummy.

Anything that allows me a little bit of chocolate and doesn’t pile on the pounds has got to be a bonus, especially with my forthcoming wedding approaching quickly. I also found that this bar was quite filling and it was nice as a little snack with my afternoon cuppa. It’s just the thing to keep you going half way through a tiring day.

Summary: If you're looking for a low calorie snack then try these.
