Kit Kat Chunky Peanut Butter

If you are one of the many thousands of people who commute into one of London’s terminal train stations you will be familiar with the daily obstacle course that must be cleared if you are to make your way to work. As you fight your way out you are variously harassed and harangued by chuggers, Big Issue sellers and third rate evangelists not to mention dithering tourists and sundry befuddled travellers. The temptation is to put your head down, square your shoulders and blindly barge your way to the exit ignoring all around you. This is a mistake, however, as by doing this you run the risk of missing those delightful PR girls who provide the best service in world: giving out FREE STUFF.

Is there anything in the world better than FREE STUFF? Well, probably, but let’s face it someone handing you something gratis is most likely the best thing that’s going to happen on the way to work anyway. With early observation and careful route planning it is possible to finagle several freebies without looking too much like a cheapskate. On the day in question the PR girls were handing free chocolate and as you can imagine this was causing quite a scrum, the crowd provided excellent cover though and I was able to bag three bars without incurring any dirty looks. Life really is sweet sometimes.

So, what had I been given? Well it’s not much of a surprise given the topic of the review but so as not to break the narrative flow I’m going to tell you anyway: I was now in possession of three lovely Kit Kat Chunky Peanut Butter special edition bars. This was very exciting for a number of reasons: I love Kit Kat Chunky bars, I love peanut butter and I love things that are FREE. All good then. To be honest when I first saw these I didn’t notice the word ‘butter’ and assumed it was some kind of Kit Kat / Snickers collaboration and while this sounds intriguing I couldn’t see how it would work, one for the Nestle boffins to work on I suppose but closer inspection revealed the truth.

I don’t know how much these cost (did I mention they were free) but I would reckon that one could be had for around 40p. At this price band there is plenty of competition for your snack based budget so is this worth a go? Lets find out.

Presentation~
Reassuringly the bar is the same shape and size as the traditional Kit Kat Chunky bar. You’ve got the familiar red wrapper and Kit Kat logo but supplemented with bold swathes of yellow and in a large welcoming font the words ‘Peanut Butter’. Not so reassuringly the wrapper also gives you lots of unwelcome information, such as fat content (15.8g), calories (269kcal) and carbohydrates (27.5g). All bad news in a 50g bar but who the hell reads that crap anyway, it’s a chocolate based snack for heaven’s sake – get over it.
Once naked the bar looks exactly the same as the original Chunky.

Taste~
To say I was excited about eating this is an understatement (I’m easily bored at work) but eating a Kit Kat Chunky is more of an event than most chocolate bars and one that can be savoured. You can nibble off the thick chocolate around the edges and then bite off the wafer layers one by one, truly a treat to be enjoyed.
So, first nibble off the chocolate at one end. Very nice, tasty Kit Kat chocolate and pleasantly substantial but what’s this, a distinct whiff of peanut butter mingling with the expected chocolate undertones. Hmmm, not quite as pleasant as I expected. Another nibble, moving down the side now and more good chocolate before – oh bugger it, let’s crack on and just eat the thing. Taking a manly bite I am overwhelmed by the sickly sweet hit of the peanut butter.

Oh my God, this is disgusting!

The flavour is dominated by the too sweet peanut butter, the wafer is soggy and distinctly non crispy and I can no longer taste the chocolate. I must press on; two more bites and it’s gone from bad to worse, my mouth is a sticky, sludgy mess and my teeth are singing from the over-powering sweetness.

Must.

Finish.

It.

A couple more bites and it’s gone. Thank God that’s over, that was possibly the most unpleasant chocolate bar I’ve ever had. Something must be wrong, I love Kit Kats and I’m sure that that must have been just some awful aberration so I launch into the second bar hoping against hope that there is an improvement. But no, things just continue to get worse. My teeth are singing even louder, all I can taste is peanut butter and with so much sweetness I think I could vomit. And I’ve still got one bar left.

Conclusion~
I couldn’t face the third one so I palmed it off on someone else and that tells you just how god-awful I thought it was. It knocked my faith in Kit Kat I can tell you and I had to get an original Chunky bar from the vending machine before any more damage was done. Like falling off a horse the best thing to do is get straight back on again and thankfully that paid for bar was lovely.

Summary: Sickliest, nastiest chocolate bar I've ever tasted
