Advantages: Well... all I can say is, they've cornered the market on white chocolate and are readily available.
Disadvantages: Many ethical ones, as well as the fact that they just don't taste good.
For this interview, I won't get into the controversy surrounding the Nestlé corporation and its many alledged (or perhaps not-so-alledged) misdeeds, suffice it to say that usually I boycott Nestlé and its many subsidiary companies (After Eights, Quality Street, Rowntree's, Buxton and Vittel water; the list is enormous...). To see why I usually boycott this company, take a look at its wikipedia page under 'Controversy and Criticism'.
Anyway, I would dearly have liked to avoid buying a Nestlé product, but unfortunately the reasonably-sized Co-op I was in had NO other white chocolate - apart from its own brand which had crispy rice in it. I was buying ingredients for a chocolate cheesecake (which was a bit of a disaster but that's another story) and needed plain white chocolate. So I bought a 4 pack of Milkybar buttons, used 3 for the recipe and shared the remaining pack with my boyfriend afterwards.
Now I do love chocolate; I'm not one of those people without a sweet tooth, and into the bargain I love almost anything that is bad for me, which makes eating healthily a constant struggle! With this in mind, I should have loved this naughty treat... but I didn't.
This is quite a feat for a chocolate, particularly a -white- chocolate, which is my favourite kind; but halfway through my share of the fun-sized bag (which is only 20g!) I was getting sick of them. Of course I finished my share - it would have been rude not to; but I was left feeling a little disappointed.
The buttons were, for me, overly sweet, almost to the point of being bitter. It was like they had replaced the creamy milkiness of normal chocolate with sugar and flavouring. Additionally, they were very artificial-tasting - I mean, of course, this should be expected from a mass-produced and homogenised chocolate, but it's not the taste I get from similar brands like Dairy Milk.
I mean, what's the point on splurging on calories and fat if you don't get a taste sensation?
I don't know if this is unique to buttons or if it's Milkybar chocolate in general, and maybe my palate has matured as I cook mostly all my own food, but I just don't remember Milkybars tasting like this.
Anyway, it's no loss as I certainly would never buy them again, even if they had been delicious; my conscience wouldn't let me.
Summary: Maybe I should have gone for the crispy rice chocolate.
