Advantages: It;s chocolate

Disadvantages: Too sickly for me

Last weekend we were shopping in Tesco's and we were fancying something sweet and noticed the Mars bags were on offer at two for £3 so we chose two bags of the Toffee Crisp Clusters and two bags of Munchies with the idea that Dave would take most of them back to Scotland when he went back to work on Tuesday. Sadly he has had a really nasty cold and so hasn't yet gone back to work so we have ended up eating the chocolates between us!

In Tesco's a packet containing 150g of Munchies currently costs £1.75 and there is an offer on the Mars and Nestle bags meaning that you can buy two for £3. The offer covers Planets, Maltesers, Minstrels, M & Ms, Aero Bubbles and Revels.

I always used to love Munchies but haven't had any for years so it was a chance to see if they were as good as I remembered them. The last time I had Munchies they were little square sweets and were sold in a long packet along with the chocolate bars of the day. I believe that they are still available like this but now we can also buy them in these new 150g bags.

The bag of Munchies is red and orange with the red Nestle logo and Munchies written on the front. There is a picture of three Munchies one of which is cut in half to show the centre. I noticed that the Munchies shown are dome shaped sweets as opposed to the square ones I remember from my childhood.

There are also the now familiar boxes showing the nutritional information expressed as a percentage of the recommended adult daily allowance.

As with a lot of these packets you tear across the top, below which is are two plastic strips to be used to reseal the packet so that, if all the chocolate isn't eaten at one sitting, the remaining contents can be kept fresh.

If you are one of those strange people who can leave some for another day the idea is that you tear off the top of the pack and then, after eating some of the contents, you can press the two pieces of plastic together to form a seal and keep the remaining contents fresh.

Looking at the back of the packet I found that these sweets were 'milk chocolates with soft caramel and crisp biscuit centre'.

I opened the bag and the lovely fragrance of milk chocolate wafted up to my nostrils. Now I would prefer Cadbury's milk chocolate given the choice but I am quite happy to have Mars or Nestle chocolate occasionally.

Having remembered how much I used to enjoy Munchies when I was younger I was really looking forward to trying these. From what I remember of the original sweets these are chewier and consequently sicklier too. There seemed to be too much caramel and not enough biscuit for my liking. Incidentally looking at the back of the packet I find that each sweet is 29% caramel and 9% biscuit.

I found that the first few tasted really nice but after that they began to taste more and more sickly. Sadly I did find that I couldn't resist eating them and so I ate more than I really should have done and felt quite queasy once I had finished. Now that may sound silly to some of you but I am sure that there are others who understand completely!

Now for the disappointing stuff - the nutritional value per 100g (2/3 of a pack) is as follows:

Calories 504
Protein 4.4g
Carbohydrates 64.7g
Of which sugars 55.0g
Fat 25.3g
Of which saturates 16.4g
Fibre 0.6g
Salt 0.3g

So there you are, eat them as an occasional treat if they are your sort of thing and make sure that they do form part of a generally sensible diet and there won't be any serious repercussions apart from the general enjoyment of the chocolates - as for me I won't be trying these again.

What I will do though is treat myself to one of the old fashioned packets to see if they taste the same as I remember. I'll let you know how I get on.

Summary: I'll stick to Cadburys in future

These are OK but not great.

The trouble is I remember eating these all the time when I was a kid too and I find they haven't changed that much apart from being less chalky.

Now Nestle have gone and changed their mint versions from Mintola to After Eight.
