Advantages: taste
Disadvantages: calories
Fans of polos may not know that you can also get them in Spearmint flavour. Yes, these sugary mints have been going since the 40s, and will currently set you back around 35p a pack.
The uses of Polo range from freshening your breath to getting a bit of a sugar burst. In terms of breath, it is one of the few nice tasting breath mints out there, as many taste odd or way too strong. Anyway, I don't use them for breath, I use them because they are fun to eat! Let me explain:
The texture and shape of the mint is its biggest draw (for me). The round shape with a hole in it makes it perfect for whistling through, or sucking in minty air. The writing 'polo' is raised on the edges, and adds a clicket-clanky texture to the experience, which is really fun to run your tongue and teeth over. Of course, as you do this, you're getting a nice taste of mint too.
At 130 calories a pack, I won't be eating too many, but they are nice. Oh, and don't make the mistake of going for the sugar free; I don't know what it is they put in them, but eating just one packet will give you more trips to the loo than you'd care to have.
The difference in taste between these and normal polos is that these are cooler and softer in taste. They have a similar taste to toothpaste, and are good for those who find the original a bit too strong mint-wise.
The only thing I don't like is the wrapper. The way they're packed, you always end up with little bits of floaty paper everywhere - in your pockets, on the floor - it's dead annoying.
All in all, a simple, tasty classic that deserves its place for breath freshening ability, and all round good shape and texture.
Summary: do it
