Advantages: Substantial chocolate hit, smooth chunky chocolate
Disadvantages: Quite sickly as it's so big, lots of calories and fat for a rather boring bar
I hadn't had a Yorkie bar for years until last week, when I saw two guys pick two bars for lunch and joke about it being 'just for tough guys'. I snorted and thought I was a butch enough girl to handle one chocolate bar so for 46p I got myself one. They're just as I remember them to be; a lot of rich chocolate but nothing spectacular.
The original Yorkie bar was introduced in 1976 in its classic shiny blue wrapper. They're produced by Nestle, who have years of experience in producing quality confectionary products (since back in 1866). Individual bars retail around 46p (Tesco), but many smaller convenience stores can charge upto 60p. I would say these are very well-known bars, though not as popular as other Nestle brands. In 2001 they launched their 'It's not for girls campaign'...pah! If I want one you just try and stop me! That said, I don't think I'll be rushing back to Tesco to get another one anytime soon, but it was nice to take a little trip down memory lane. I've only seen these sold individually, and although there are some flavour variations I've only ever seen raisin and biscuit. They've expanded the range slightly to include smaller biscuit bars which are sold in packs of 7 for £1.25 (Tesco) where they've made them more snacksized and added biscuit to liven it up a bit.
As you'd expect with Yorkie, you get their rich sweet chocolate like you'd find on other much loved chocolate treats like Kit Kat. The concept of the bar is very simple; maximum chocolate! That's all there is to it, which I find a bit boring and sickly because it's a substantial sized bar. Each bar contains 367 calories and 21.5g of fat, which is a lot for one bar. These contain around 100+ calories and 5+g fat more than the more chocolately regular chocolate bars, like Double Decker or Mars. Is it worth it? Well, I do like Nestle chocolate which is presented in 5 blocks with 'Yorkie' written on each. But I find it can be slightly dry and sweet, so it's better in thin layers over biscuit, like on Kit Kats. When you get chunky blocks of it it can be very filling and quite sickly. It does have a nice feel to it though; if you're looking for something to 'fill the gap', you get the sense of a meal almost from this bar.
Overall, it's nothing special. If you want a big chocolate hit, then you'll get it here. It's nice tasting chocolate and 46p is about average for this type of bar but I wouldn't pay any more than that. It's quite sickly and personally I'd rather have a smaller bar of galaxy with creamier chocolate. Just as well it's 'not for girls'... Guys, you can keep the calories and I'll save my money!
Summary: Chunks of chocolate sound like a good idea, but not after you've eaten it...

- 05/01/09 I think that is kind of the point of the advertising...reverse psychology. I personally avoid 'man food' purely because of the calories! |
