Advantages: tasty!

Disadvantages: none

The New York bakery company make a range of delicious bagels in a variety of flavours including plain, multi-seed and cinnamon and raisin. This review is for the cinnamon and raisin bagels which are currently on offer at Tescos for £1.00 for a pack of 5 (usual price £1.25). The packaging is bright and distinctive with a large picture of the statue of liberty on the front along with the company name. At the back of the packet we are told that the company use the finest quality ingredients and an authentic method of simmering the dough in boiling water which seals in the flavour and creates a unique texture and shiny crust. The bagels are then stone-baked to give a crisp, golden finish. The bagels are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

On opening the packet the first thing I noticed was the strong smell of cinnamon and fruit, which smelt absolutely gorgeous! When taking the bagels out of the packet they seem quite stodgy (as they are supposed to) and I wouldn't recommend eating them as they are. However slice and pop them in the toaster for a couple of minutes and they transform to become quite light and crispy with the same texture as thick sliced bread. I have them spread with a little butter and they taste delicious - fruity, slightly sweet with a hint of cinnamon that is not too overpowering. The packet also has other serving suggestions such as topping the bagel with fruits such as strawberries or blueberries or having them with chocolate spread or cheese. I've tried them with plain cream cheese and that worked quite well too. There are other recipes on their website (www. Newyorkbakery.co.uk).

Nutritional Information:
According to the front of the packet the bagels are low in fat and a source of fibre. The nutritional information can be found at the base of the pack and each bagel contains 215kcal, 6.5g of protein, 43.4g of carbohydrates of which 8.9g are sugars, 1.7g fat of which 0.2g is saturated, 3.8g of fibre and 0.8g of salt.

Overall I really enjoyed these bagels and I do have them fairly regularly. I'd definitely recommend giving them a go!

Summary: give them a go!
