Advantages: Really great taste and fun to eat

Disadvantages: Extremely high sugar and sat fat

Biscuits are a wonderful snack, if not for your waist line then they are for your taste buds, especially if they are chocolate. That's why I like Oreos so much. They're an extremely popular type of biscuit, they were originally an American brand but they are so popular that you find them on most Supermarket or convenience store shelves in the U.K as well. An Oreo is basically two pieces of chocolate biscuit sandwiches together with cream in the middle.

I buy my packs from Tesco where they currently have an offer on until the 16/09/2008 where you can buy a pack of 14 for £0.49 rather than the usual £0.87 so of course I bought 4 packets this weekend, they'll all be gone within a few days. Anyway they come in a dark blue wrapper which has a light blue streak across the front on which the name Oreo is written plus a picture of an Oreo with the top twisted off of it. On the back of the packet you can find the ingredients, nutritional information and eating instructions.

The ingredients, which I include in most of my reviews for people who suffer from food allergies are:
Sugar, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oils (Antioxidant, E-320), Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder (7%), Glucose and Fructose Syrup, Raising Agents (Sodium and Ammonium Bicarbonates), Dried Whey (from Milk), Cocoa Mass, Salt, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Flavouring

This means that they contain Wheat and Milk plus they may contain traces of Sesame Seeds and Nuts so avoid them if you allergic to any of these things. These probably aren't the healthiest biscuits in the world, as I said before they aren't good for your waist line as two biscuits (and who on earth will only be able to eat 2?) contains:

Calories:
113kcal, 6% of your GDA
Sugar:
9.5g, 11% of your GDA
Fat:
5g, 7% of your GDA
Saturates:
2.6g, 13% of your GDA
Salt:
0.3g, 4% of your GDA

As you can see that is an awful lot of sugar and fat for just two biscuits so please don't eat too many of these as they really are very unhealthy. Also bear in mind that 1 packet contains 14 Oreos and therefore 77% of your GDA of sugar and 31% of your GDA of saturated fat which is extremely high.

The eating instructions are made up of a slogan on the back with three pictures as well it says "Twist Lick and Dunk", this is because the best way to eat them is meant to be to twist the top off, lick off the creamy centre then dunk them.

As soon as you open the packet you will be able to smell the chocolate which is lovely. The biscuits aren't that big considering their nutritional values but that doesn't matter, they have to be small enough to be able to dunk them. They are circular in shape and the biscuit part is a very dark brown, almost black colour and seems especially dark in comparison to the bright white vanilla filling. The filling is quite thick, I think they actually bought out a version of these a few years ago with double the filling in but I think that these have enough as it is.

Now the most important bit, the taste. I eat them as the packet tells me too. They can be quite stiff to twist off sometimes especially if you have put them in the fridge, that will make them almost impossible to twist. Keep trying though and they will come apart. The vanilla cream filling is fairly soft and sticks to both of the biscuit pieces, it has a wonderful refreshing flavour without being too overpowering. The chocolate biscuit pieces are quite hard of you eat them on their own so it's best to dunk them. I do believe the advert currently shows them being dunked into a glass of milk and so I tried this because I really don't like tee or coffee. Dunking them makes the biscuit a lot softer and its then easy to eat, it has a very strong chocolate taste which is what I expected seeing as it is so dark in colour, it isn't too strong though and does taste better after being dunked. It also gives the milk a subtle hint of chocolate flavour which is very pleasant. If you decide to eat the Oreo without the three step guide you'll find it is quite hard to bite into but still tastes great, the refreshing vanilla and the strong chocolate balance each other out and create a lovely taste.

Overall I think that these are a lovely biscuit/cookie whatever it is you want to define them as, they have a great taste and are fun to eat. Their only drawback is the huge amount of sugar and saturated fat they contain so please do be careful of how many you eat. I give them 8 out of 10 because of their unhealthiness.

Summary: A worrying amount of sat fat and sugar but a great taste
