Advantages: My American hubby is very happy to be able to buy them here now!
Disadvantages: Quite dry & hard.
Oreo cookies became widely available in the UK only last year, having been a tradition in America for over 50 years. They had been available for a few years prior at Sainsbury's in individual snack size packs, but can now be found at all big supermarkets in the usual barrel-shaped packaging, along with snack tubs containing mini Oreo's, & snack packs featuring individual packs of 4 regular sized cookies.
British consumers may have had prior experience of the Oreo cookie in 'Cookies & Cream' ice-cream, available at Baskin Robbins or Haagen-Daz's. Oreo's are basically an almost-black & white chocolate flavoured 'sandwich biscuit'. The biscuit is very dark due to the high cocoa content & the contrasting white centre is a vanilla flavour crème. The biscuit is quite hard & dry compared to British biscuits which tend to be more crumbly.
Since their introduction to the UK, Oreo's have been seen advertised on TV, with the slogan 'Twist, Lick, Dunk', referring to the American tradition of twisting an Oreo apart, licking the vanilla cream off the biscuit, then dunking the biscuit in milk before eating.
When I lived in America I wasn't overly keen on Oreo's, but since their introduction here they have become a popular item in the weekly shop & I quite like them now. I wouldn't say they were a favourite or anything but I will eat the odd one even when there are other biscuits left in the cupboard, so obviously I can't think they are too bad!
Each biscuit will provide you with 52 calories, 4.5g of sugar & 2.3g of fat, so it's best not to eat too many at once! A 154g pack of Oreo's will set you back around 70-80p, but are frequently on offer for 50p.
