Advantages: Keep little ones happily occupied, organic and convenient.

Disadvantages: Might go stale

Organix make a range of food for babies and children with what they call the 'no junk' promise, which means that they use organically grown ingredients and don't add any artificial additives. Organix Brands was set up in 1992 since when organic babyfood has moved from 1% to over 50% of all babyfood sales. Apparently they began as a small family business founded by Lizzie Vann who has campaigned to improve the quality of childrens foods and raise awareness of the links between childrens health and organic food, with 10 per cent of Organix profits being used for this purpose.

My daughter, (M), is seven and a half months old and for the last fortnight she has had organix apple rice cakes as part of her diet. She likes them enormously and I have bought three packets so far as they have been such a success. They are suitable for what is called stage two of weaning which is around seven months, when babies can begin to feed themselves with finger foods. Until I bought these I had only fed M home made purees and mash as I like to know exactly what she's getting. I had browsed various baby foods out of interest and found that I was attracted to the Organix range. One of the things I like about them is the clear labelling. I can see that there are only five ingredients in these rice cakes; Organic wholegrain brown rice, organic apple juice concentrate, organic cinnamon, organic coconut oil and thiamin. There is an organic standard mark on the pack. From the pack I also learn that three of these will contain approximately 23 calories. There are two other rice cake varieties I have yet to try - orange and plain.

I thought these might be convenient to take out and about with us and it has proved to be so. I have also given them to M at home and am amazed how happy and quiet they keep her. M has always been a very sicky baby; she has diagnosed reflux, but this is improving and the rice cakes are one food that have hardly ever made a reappearance. The taste doesn't matter to me as my baby loves them and it's her opinion that matters, but I have tasted them and can report that although initially dry, they soften up nicely in the mouth and taste pretty sweet. My daughter usually manages to eat most of two in one sitting and sometimes tries a third but usually ends up playing with it. When she finishes the first she screams for the next one. They can tend to go stale fairly quickly, but if you store them in a tupperware tub or something similar this shouldn't be a problem. Another possible problem I can think of is that you might end up eating half of them yourself! As with anything fed to a young baby there is bound to be a bit of a mess; sticky crumbs and sticky palms to wipe. If you watch a baby feeding his/herself with its first foods you'll notice how they hold it and eat around the edges as they can't aren't able to get to the bit of food in the centre of their palm, they have to drop it first. My daughter ends up with a bit of sticky rice cake stuck to her palm and bangs her hands up and down fruitlessly until I help her out, not a criticism though, just cute.

You can buy Organix rice cakes in a wide range of supermarkets and shops. They come in 50 gram packets which at about 2 grams per cake gives you approximately twenty five in a bag. I got my last pack from my local Co-op and it cost me £1.05. I am a satisfied customer so far and will be checking out other Organix products.

Summary: I'm a fan
