Advantages: yummy healthy snack for babies, easy for babies to chew

Disadvantages: none

In an attempt get my 8 month old Son to learn how to eat food by himself; a few people suggested buying Organix Rice Cakes as they make great first finger foods. I have never been a lover of Rice Cakes, as they usually taste bland and was sceptical that my Son would enjoy them as rice cakes squeak in your mouth when you are eating them and I imagine, that it's like chewing flavoured polystyrene (not that I have tried eating polystyrene!)

Organix are a well known company who make foods for babies and toddlers and as their name suggests, their foods contain Organic ingredients. Organix also support health promotion projects to encourage better food choices, so it is reassuring to know that there's no junk in their foods.

Organix Apple Rice Cakes are for babies on Stage 2 of weaning (7-9 months old) who are getting ready to learn to feed themselves. The Rice Cakes contain Organic Wholegrain Brown Rice (79%), Organic Apple Concentrate (20%), Organic Cinnamon & Organic Coconut Oil (<1%) and Thiamin (under <1%).

Other Rice Cakes in the range include: Organic Orange Rice Cakes (which are also nice), Organic Plain Rice Cakes, Organic Blueberry and Raspberry Rice Cakes. Although I have to say that the Apple Rice Cakes are the tastiest of the range.

At home my Son usually has fruit and vegetable batons as finger foods, but as the rice cakes are in a snack size bag of 50g, costing £1.05 they are great to put in your bag when out and about. At the moment he will have a snack of 3 rice cakes as they are filling. Also, eating rice cakes are hard work! Why? Because they are dry and stick to your teeth. When my son eats rice rakes it is one of the only times I can guarantee that he will drink water from his beaker, as it is thirsty work and always gets little bits stuck to his top lip, which look like teeth!

Each rice cake is about the size of a milk carton top, a handy size for small fingers. One side of the rice cake is plain and the other is light brown and looks toasted as it has a coating of Apple juice and Cinnamon. Rice cakes tend to be dry, but the Apple and Cinnamon coating melts in your mouth. This makes it easier for babies to eat and reduces the risk of choking, as the rice cakes tend to dissolve after a few chews.

My son only eats a few at a time and doesn't eat them everyday, so if your little one doesn't eat the bag in one go, just fold the top over with a peg and they will keep for a week and still remain crunchy. Or alternatively keep them in an airtight container.

I would recommend Organix Apple Rice Cakes as they make good first finger foods. I wouldn't give them to my Son everyday as they are sweet but they do make a tasty treat and are an ideal snack when out and about.

I would never have believed that a child would actually eat this polystyrene, but now I have to believe it. My wife eats this stuff; I just give it one look and take my Provita out . . . Well reviewed. Thanks!
