Advantages: Organic, No added nasties, Tasty

Disadvantages: None

I always like to keep a variety of finger foods in my cupboard to give to my Daughter throughout the day, as I feel that it is important to encourage her to feed herself and get used to a wide range of tastes and textures. Whilst I wanted to keep in stock some biscuits, I found it quite difficult to find a healthy version, as it appears that a lot of baby biscuits contain high amounts of sugar (and in the case of the recently withdrawn Bear Biscuits from Cow and Gate - high levels of trans-fats).

This is where Organix come in - they produce finger food for babies, which comes with a 'No Junk Promise', which means that they include no added sugar, no hydrogenated fat and are made from organic ingredients. I was browsing their range in Tesco looking for a tasty treat, when I discovered these Organic Gingerbread Men and decided to give them a try. They come well recommended as they have been given a gold star in the Mother & Baby Awards 2007/2008 too, which added to my confidence in buying the product.

Each box of biscuits contains 15 little gingerbread men made with wholegrain flour. Something which really appealed to me was the fact that these biscuits are not sweetened with sugar. Instead they are naturally sweetened with organic grape juice! The rest of the ingredients list is equally as good, with no added nasties.

The biscuits themselves are contained within 3 sections of a plastic tray within the outer cardboard box. They are appealing looking characters with a smiley face and 3 buttons included in the design. Each biscuit weighs approximately 9g, is roughly about 3 inches tall and is a lovely golden brown colour. The gingerbread smell is very subtle and can only really be smelt if you put the biscuit right up to your nose and give a big sniff! The taste is obviously quite gingery, but as it designed for babies, it's not too overpowering or strong.

The box suggests that these biscuits should not be given to babies under the age of 12 months, however I have given these to my Daughter from a relatively early age, as she has never had any problems with choking and is always supervised at mealtimes. At first she did struggle to eat these biscuits as she didn't have teeth and they were quite hard for her to bite into. However I tried her with them again after her teeth started to appear and now they are a firm favourite! They are the perfect size for her to hold and as they are a hard biscuit they hold together well in her little hands. She enjoys biting into them and seems to find them easy to chew. Some of the Organix range can be quite messy to eat, but these aren't too bad and don't stain which is great.

I will keep buying these as they are really the perfect sweet treat and I really trust the brand, which is important when buying baby food. I tend to give my baby one biscuit at a time, so a box of 15 lasts for ages making them good value for money (in the region of 11p per biscuit).

These are currently on sale for £1.67 at Tesco.com, although there are occasionally offers on to make them cheaper. They are also available to buy at other large supermarkets and stockists of baby food.
