Advantages: The packaging looks rather fetching and it's cheaper than B&J's and Haagen Daz.

Disadvantages: Little frozen bitter balls of ice which are supposed to be raspberries!

<<<<<<<<<<<<Te sco Finest Raspberry Ice Cream>>>>>>>>>>>>

Well there I was in Tesco thinking of how much of an ice cream snob I was being only eating good old Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Daz.

Tsk, tsk at me I thought. Why not give another brand a chance at making it into my ice cream hall of fame!

Okay then, there I was head in freezer (not literally) having a good old rummage. I never buy soft scoop ice cream as I find this to be the pits and I never buy anything with the words "value" written on the tub as you know you're going to get an inferior quality ice cream 9 times out of 10!

So I've dragged myself away for the B&J's and the Haagen Daz, I've ran past the cheap stuff and then I spot the "Tesco finest range". At the time of purchase this was on offer, what better time to give a new treat a go than when on special off!

The normal price is £2.59 for a 500ml tub so it's easier on the pocket than the aforementioned treats but I got it for £1.99 so I felt rather smug with my little saving and didn't mind throwing caution to the wind and giving it a go. I did feel a little unfaithful though, lol.

Anyway there are several flavours available including, raspberry, vanilla and coffee. I'm sure they do a few more but this just depends on what's in stock when you shop.

I went for the raspberry, as I'm rather partial to them.

The packaging is rather fetching too. A silver lid and label on a see through plastic tub. Like all the finest range, the colour silver is used to emphasize the fact that this is a bit posh and will cost you a bit more than there usual run of the mill stuff. On the label you'll find the usual info. Nutrition, ingredients, use by dates and a description of what you will be experiencing in you decide to purchase the product and a lovely picture of raspberri

es surrounded by pinky coloured ice cream!
You will also notice that this ice cream has a little plastic seal around the lid so you know no one has been tampering with your treat before you get it home. That is a huge plus side for ice creams I feel as B&J's don?t do a seal and on occasion this has very nearly put me off buying it (nearly but not quite, lol).

The description on the tub promises a fresh fruity flavour of fresh raspberries and a rich creamy ice cream. Yum! It's made from a blend of milk, cream, sugar, and butter and of coarse raspberries. It claims it will bring the taste of summer to your table all year round!!
It looks really scrumptious in the tub as you can see through the plastic container so it is all rather tempting isn't it. (Well it is if you like raspberries).

~ THE VERDICT ~

So there I was, I'd waited for some peace and quiet on the western front (or for the kiddies to be asleep to put it another way) before I peeled the seal off the tub.
They suggest the you leave the ice cream as room temperature for 5 minutes before trying to serve.

However this wasn't necessary! I discovered that my so-called rich and creamy treat was in fact Mr. Whippy in disguise!
I could scoop it out of the tub no problem at all and this sent the alarm bells off straight away. With top quality ice creams I usually find it really difficult to scoop any out straight away, unless they contain caramel.

Trying not to be put off until I had actually tasted it, I put a large dollop of the stuff into a bowl and chilled out on the sofa in my usual ice cream position, lol. The texture of it was more like a mousse than an ice cream. I found nothing startling or Luxurious about it at all I would go so far as to say it was slightly greasy.

It did taste vaguely of raspberries though so I will give them credit for that. But most of the whole raspberries where bitter to the taste and not
at al
l a taste sensation, they certainly didn't bring images of summer into my mind, that's for sure! They where more like little frozen bitter balls of ice which was a huge disappointment.
Apart from that, it melted within minutes, which shrieks cheap in my mind.
I can't think of a really positive thing to say about this ice cream and I love ice cream.
I certainly couldn't finish the tub and no one else seemed to like it either. It was binned! Yes, that's correct. It ended up in the bin.

I will now resort back to my ice cream snobbery and will not feel guilty about it. At least I know it will be eaten and is money well spent.

I can't give the nutritional information as I've binned the tub but let me assure you it was very lardy and not worth it!

Oh and for those with nut allergies, this product has been made in a factory, which handles nutty products so you might want to avoid this even if I hadn't put you off it.

PS: In general I love the Tesco Finest Range but this ice cream just didn't make the grade for me, sorry to all who may love this but it's definitely not B&J's or Haagen Daz.

Great review. I think Tesco do some darn good things in the ice cream department.

We bought a raspberry Pavlova ice-cream from Tescos, or at least I could have sworn it was from Tescos - it was wonderful, really tasty with bits of merangue in it too :oP
