Advantages: Creamy
Disadvantages: Expensive
On my list of preferred comfort foods, you will find chocolate in the number one spot but icecream undoubtedly comes a very close second! The other day, I was feeling particularly down in the dumps. Walking around my local Co-op I decided that there was only one way to cheer myself up....so I headed straight for the frozen dessert aisle. Nestled between scrumptious tubs of Haagen Dazs and the more traditional offerings of Walls, I spotted something that I had not seen before. It was Co-ops own brand Criminally Creamy Blueberry Icecream......*swirls of blueberry and vanilla dairy icecream with blueberry pieces and cinnamon coated biscuits*. At this point my mouth was watering uncontrollably! Some people would instantly be put off by the Co-op branding but the insistence of my taste buds was telling me that I was willing to give it a try. The name and description are tempting enough as it is but an effort has also been made with the packaging of this product. The combination of nice photography on the front, deep purple colouring and a hint of gold give it a feeling of sumptuous quality. This results in instant attraction. Next, I noticed the fact that it is in a Haagen Dazs *all mine* style 500ml tub. Perfect....I had to have it! I couldnt wait to try it. If Id had a spoon with me, I would have found it very difficult to stop myself tucking in at the check-out. Luckily, I dont live very far from the store and I was soon at home in the comfort of my big, cosy armchair. With icecream tub in one hand and teaspoon in the other (I like using a tiny spoon to try to make it last longer!), I was eager to satisfy my *Im feeling sorry for myself* craving. Nothing could disturb me now. I almost took the phone off the hook but I thought this mi
ght be a bit over the top......I just decided that if it rang, I wouldnt bother to answer it!! I took my first spoonful. Mmmmmm! Delicious and creamy. The blueberry and vanilla icecream are swirled together although not so much that the flavours mingle together. You can easily taste one at a time, if you so wish. Within the icecream I was expecting even more of a treat. As described, the blueberry flavour actually contains blueberries. There are lots of them and they give a lovely, tangy taste - not too sickly. The blueberries are nice but being frozen inevitably makes them a little bit crunchy. The vanilla icecream contains the pieces of biscuit. Again, there are generous amounts of these but I found that they are a bit soft. It would have been much better if they had been able to retain their crunchiness. I also noticed that although the biscuits were meant to taste of cinnamon, they er, didnt basically. Although I was a little bit disappointed it didnt stop me from finishing the lot! After looking at the nutrition information and doing some quick mathematics, I was a bit shocked to realise that I had just consumed 44g of fat and 800 calories! So, was it worth it?..... Well, I must admit that it made me feel much better but at a price of £2.29, I was hoping for something a bit more special. On a positive note, the actual icecream itself was extremely nice - I suppose you could describe it as being *criminally creamy*. The sweet blueberry and subtle vanilla flavours complimented each other perfectly. On the negative side, the added fruit and biscuits are a great idea but are not very successful unfortunately. I think I will stick to Haagen Dazs in future!
