Advantages: They taste awesome and go well with tea
Disadvantages: Fat. Fat. More fat.
Mmm, croissants filled with chocolate. Two of the best foods ever, right there together, being best mates. Does it work? Hell yes. They're great for breakfast, warm from the oven with a cup of tea (or coffee, if that's your thing. Personally I don't really like coffee but I imagine they would go well together). They only take a few minutes in the oven as well to go all crispy and for the chocolate inside to melt a bit, making it taste even better. In fact, these aren't even worth eating cold, they tend to be a bit chewy and bland when not warmed through.
As the other review says, the ones we get in England are probably a bit sub-standard in comparison to the French ones, but they're still worth a look. Here's a brief summary of my recent pain au chocolat related experiences, from a number of Well Known Mega-Retailers near you!
ASDA: Can't remember the exact price, but they were the best overall value for money as you got more in a pack for literally some pence. The all important core chocolate component wasn't too sickly either, which can ruin them. Good job ASDA.
Sainsbury's: These are worth getting in the 4 packs, not individually. Not quite as nice as the ASDA ones, they're a bit chewier rather than flaky when baked. They are TOTALLY HORRID when cold. Under NO circumstance eat these cold (unless actually starving and/or without a fan assisted oven) as they are grim.
Somerfield: The open-air bakery shelf ones were all stale. but the ones that were sealed were lovely - especially since they had all been reduced from about 70p to 10p cos it was the end of the day. I bought about 6 and ate them all at once for breakfast the next day. Then I felt sick. This may have been almost completely my fault due to a momentary surge of gluttony, and not a reflection on Somerfield's baked products.
Tesco: Amazingly, Tesco haven't opened a branch near us, so I can't comment.
Belgium: Had some in Belgium a few years ago with some chocolat-ameliore (delicious hot chocolate loaded with rum which will get you totally battered if you have more than 3), which was the pinnacle of my chocolaty-croissant adventures. Indulgent boozy chocolate breakfast on mainland Europe. Marvellous. It was a cafe opposite a bookshop in the covered marketplace with the marble floor in Brussels, if you find it let me know!
So yes, they are great. But I wouldn't recommend you eat them every day if you wish to stay relatively healthy, as they are basically saturated-fat grenades, waiting to destroy your waistline.
Summary: Go buy some now! Treat yourself!
