Advantages: Cheap, okay, convenient

Disadvantages: Nothing special

McVities Penguin bars have been around for years. As a child my brother and I would argue over which of the nice shiny coloured wrappers we would pick for our biscuit treat. Why? who knows as each biscuit is just the same as the others, but there you go. The wrapping has slightly changed over the years and is now more of a coloured cellophane with a penguin on each one.

Hubby brought a multi-pack which contained nine biscuits home. This was part of a special deal at Asda and included Classic and Gold biscuits also. Now I have not bought Penguin bars for quite a while, as I was told that they are one of the worst snacks you could eat. However looking at the wrapper they seem to have changed a little.

Penguin biscuit bars now have:-
No hydrogenated vegetable oil
No artificial colours or flavours.
Are made with milk chocolate.

In the past the 'chocolate' was only chocolate flavoured coating. So how do they taste I hear you ask?

Each biscuit is about 2 inches by one inch by 1/4 of an inch deep. So firstly they are smaller than of late no matter what anyone says. The penguin comprises of two chocolate flavoured biscuits that are sandwiched together with chocolate cream. The whole lot is then covered in milk chocolate.

The chocolate is pretty bog standard but it tastes fine. The biscuit is ok but does not have a lot of flavour. Each biscuit has 114 calories which is not bad. They are convenient and a good size for pack up's and snacks.

I suppose the problem is that although they taste alright they are nothing special. There are many tastier biscuits on offer at this moment in time. Apparently they were first marketed in 1932 but of course then there would have been nowhere near the amount of choice that there is today.

As a cheap and cheerful snack biscuit they are fine. Each wrapper now has a joke also for example:
Q.How does a penguin make pancakes?
A.With it's flippers.

Say no more.

You can also buy penguin cake bars now and they too are tasty but nothing special so I guess the choice is yours.

Asda at the mo have all these multi-pack biscuits for 4 packs for £3.50 which is really quite cheap.

Thanks for reading
