Any regular readers of my food reviews will be well aware by now that I have a huge sweet tooth and I must admit that I do love biscuits in particular. I also really love dunking biscuits into my tea too, whether they are chocolate covered offerings or not!
It was whilst I was in my local 'Farmfoods' frozen food store recently that I was choosing some biccies to re-stock my beloved biscuit barrel at home. Noticing that the McVitie's Penguin bars were on sale for the brilliant price of 69 pence for a packet of nine biscuits, I remembered that it had been quite a while since I had last eaten one of these chocolate biscuits and decided to give them another go.
The packet only has a few of the chocolate bars remaining, so I think it is safe to say that these have proven to be a hit in our household!
The bright red-coloured packaging for these biscuit bars proudly informs me that they contain 'No artificial colours or flavours' as well as 'No hydrogenated vegetable oil' and finally 'With added calcium'. Considering that chocolate biscuits are very much a 'sin food' for a lot of people, these claims will no doubt make them slightly more appealing to many!
Each chocolate biscuit is individually wrapped in a very brightly-coloured wrapper, such as pink or turquoise. I can see that each one has an image of a very cheeky looking penguin and each reminds us again that these biscuits come to us 'With added calcium' provided.
As soon as I have peeled the wrapper from the biscuit I am hit with the smell of what appears to be chocolate of a high quality. The smell is very delicious and not at all sickly.
Upon taking a (generous) bite from the delicious looking biscuit, I am instantly aware that the biscuit is a sort of 'sandwich' type design. The top and bottom layers are the same - a crunchy biscuit - and in the centre of these layers is the most delicious chocolate cream filling. The whole biscuit is then covered in good-quality milk chocolate.
The texture of the biscuit is very nice which I think is because the chocolate cream compliments the outer layers of biscuits perfectly. The biscuit is not overly hard or brittle, but has a nice 'crunch' to it.
The overall taste is simply delicious! The chocolate cream filling is very sweet, although not sickly at all. The biscuit too is ideal if you have a sweet tooth - very sweet and tasty with a nice crunch to it. I also found that the milk chocolate rounded the taste off nicely.
The packaging for these biscuits informs me that they are suitable for vegetarians. There is also information about the biscuits containing gluten, milk and soya.
The nutritional information on the back of the packaging informs me that each biscuit will provide 113 calories and 6.1g of fat which I thought was very high!
That said, I would still recommend these biscuits quite highly because of their delicious chocolaty taste - if you are a fan of sweet, chocolate-tasting snacks or biscuits then you would love these - believe me!
McVities penguin biscuits are widely available from all good grocery stores and super markets and generally cost around £1 for a pack of nine bars.
These little birds definitely get full marks from me! :-D
