Advantages: Taste great, good quality

Disadvantages: Nothing really

McVitie's Penguin bars are something I have enjoyed since I was a kid. It was always a treat when mum bought a pack of them for us, but whenever we went round my grandparents' house, there was a constant supply of them.

They are essentially small choc bars, about 3 inches long, and about half an inch thick. They consist of two thin layers of biscuit that sandwich some chocolate cream and the whole thing is coated in chocolate. Biting into it is quite nice, as the biscuit breaks quite easily. It is a lovely taste as well. The choc flavour is full, and it makes your taste buds tingle when they first experience the choc sensation. The flavour mingles nicely and nothing is oversweet.

The bars come in different coloured wrappers, which mean absolutely nothing in terms of the content, as all the bars are the same. However, it does it more interesting for kids. Each wrapper also contains a joke, albeit a small and unfunny one, on the whole. Again, this is more to appeal to kids. They're not too unhealthy either, with the calories coming in at 90 per bar. Naturally, there's a decent amount of sugar in them, but then it is a chocolate bar, so not really a friend of calory counters.

The packaging is quite bright and colourful, and as the quality of the biscuit has remained high for all its years, they are still really popular. They usually come in packs of 9 or so, and can vary in price from anywhere just below and above £1. Quite often they are on offer. Other varieties have tried to produce similar, cheaper versions, such as Tesco's Value Range choc biscuit bars. They are nice enough, but don't quite have that quality of biscuit that McVitie's Penguins have.

Overall, I recommend these. They're lovely, and being a bit smaller than the regular choc bar, they are mroe ideal for kids to have as you don't feel you#re giving them an entire chocolate bar. They're readily available from most places, and well worth having a few in stock as a treat for kids.

Summary: McVitie's Penguins: chocolate: no penguins were harmed in the making......
