Up until the 1950s hop growing was the main industry of the region and they can still be found in the fields around the town. It isn't surprising to find out that Hommel is a local word for hops! The full name for this beer is actually Poperings Hommel Bier; reflecting the importance of hops and the area it is brewed in.

While in Belgium recently we called in at a few bars and felt the need to sample a few of those wonderful bottled beers. In a bar in De Haan, not far from the seaside resort of Ostend, I had (among other beers) a bottle of Hommel Bier. I rather enjoyed it and had a bottle or two in a few other bars during the break ~ I even found a couple of places that offered it on draft. ~~~THE BREWERY.
