Advantages: MILD CREAMY DELISHIOUS

Disadvantages: Mild

I bought a portion OF Port Salut cheese from my local Tesco the other day. Port salut cheese is made in disks about 23 c in diameter you would need to be feeding a lot of people if you bought a whole piece. This cheese is cut into smaller segments and is usually wrapped in cling film. And there is a small circular one available in Tescos too, I guess in some delicatessens you can get a piece that they cut direct from the large disc of cheese.

I use tescos a lot and their site is easy for me to access so I use tesco prices as a benchmark. A 150g portion cost £1.24; on offer at the mo two portions for£1.65.

The sell by date on my portions is 26 July so that gives me plenty of time to eat it in.
The small circular ones available from Tesco weigh 250g cost £2.09p.

Port Salut is a French cheese, which origins are with the Cistercian monks at Notre Dame near Laval and Angers in the Pays de la Loire; in 1959 they sold the rights of the cheese to a dairy company who now make the cheese in a factory in the Lorraine region of France on the borders of Germany.

This cheese is encased in an orange rind that is an attractive colour on any cheese board. This rind is edible, but personally I usually take most of mine off.
The cheese inside is a semi soft cheese it is made from cows milk. The colour a creamy pale yellow.

Yesterday I ate some for lunch with some crackers. Before I put some on the crackers I did a taste test. The cheese was soft in my mouth smooth textured and tasted very mild not unlike dairy lee but with a little more taste and much nicer delicious and creamy. I usually like strong cheddar or a garlic herb soft cheese but for those times when I want a mild smooth cheese this is perfect. This cheese because it is a mild flavour goes best with a plain cracker or maybe a stick of French bread, not an herby or strong tasting cracker or that will spoil the mild creamy taste. As I said it went well with my cream crackers and salad and the slice of ham I had. Young children because it is mild will like this cheese as an alternate to those dairy lee portions. Port salut cheese should be kept refrigerated but best served at room temperature the

I think this cheese makes a good summer lunch cheese. Thanks for reading Mary
