Advantages: A tasty soft cream cheese
Disadvantages: None
If I am on the wrong track I am sure there is a fellow Dooyoo member that will put me right.
I clearly remember eating Primula cheese when I was a child which is a fair few years ago!
Somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I have a picture of a dark blue box that was shaped in the form of a half a fifty pence piece, this box was filled with tasty Primula cream cheese.
Primula cream cheese is a product from Kavli Ltd who are based in Tyne and Wear and it was first introduced to the market in the late 1920's.
On my last visit to Sainsbury I replaced my tube of Primula cream cheese, yes you heard correctly! The company are now presenting their product in a soft plastic tube and they have a variety of flavours to choose from, cheese and chive, cheese with ham, cheese with shrimp and good old plain Primula cream cheese.
My favourite? The cream cheese and chive, cheese always seems to go well with any member of the onion family and this one is no exception.
The tubes are clean and easy to use, if not a little expensive at around £1.17p for 150g. The tubes seem to recreate the never ending dilemma that crops up when you near the end of the toothpaste tube, the neck of the tube withholds some of the product fiercely and refuses to part with it. This is where the scissors step in and take over, I snip the neck off of the tube and dig the remainder of the product out!
For some unknown reason the Primula cheese tube nozzle has been interfered with and as we apply pressure to the plastic tube a `star` shape squirt of cream cheese splurts out from the end of the tube. The only reason I can think of for this one is that you could squirt it onto cheese biscuits in a decorative way or maybe aim the nozzle into a party Vol Au Vent.
Primula soft cheese is a good source of calcium and it contains real chopped chives. It is free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, contains no gluten and is fine for vegetarians to enjoy.
A 35g `squeeze` which is the equivalent of 17.5% of the recommended daily intake of calcium which is essential for healthy teeth and bones.
A 35g squeeze contains 341 calories, 4.6g protein, 0.9g carbohydrate 0.4g of which is sugar, 6.7g fat of which 3.7g is saturated fat, 0.2g dietary fibre, 0.3g sodium, 0.3g salt and 140mg of calcium.
I enjoy the cream cheese on a slice of fresh bread, mind you it does seem to take a good squirt from the tube to make enough to create a satisfying topping! Primula is very pale and creamy and you can clearly see the chopped chives running through the cheese. Although the taste of the chopped chives stay in the background it is still enough to make it an interesting choice.
Primula is a versatile product and is happy to be spread onto cheese biscuits, spread onto warm toast or put into a sandwich.
It seems that Kavli, the makers of Primula cheese spreads have branched out and have re-launched their Primula Dip range, the flavours seem very tempting, Roasted Garlic, Spring Onion, Sour cream Cheese and Chive and Nacho Cheese.
All of the profts that are made from the manufacture of the Primula cheese spread are used by the makers Kavli to support worldwide humanitarian projects.
Summary: Makes a tasty sandwich filler
