Advantages: Tastes great. Quick and easy to use.

Disadvantages: None.

Cheese is one of my favourite foods and in particular soft cheese and spreads. My number one favourite soft cheese on the market is Primula who produce a variety of flavoured soft cheeses. In their original range they have four flavours: Original, Cheese and Chives, Cheese and Ham and Cheese and Prawn. I am a vegetarian so have only tried the first two listed here. In my review I will focus on the Cheese and Chives variety which is a firm favourite of mine.

Primula soft cheese is best known for being sold in malleable, squeezy tubes (although they now also have tubs). The tubes are made of sturdy plastic so never split. They are also easy to fold over when the tube starts to run out and they keep this compressed shape so it makes it easy to dispense the cheese from the end of the tube. The cap is a secure screw-on type but spins off quickly and easily. I've been eating Primula cheese since I was a child. My sisters and I used to love the shape of the cheese as we squeezed it onto the back of our hands! The star shaped nozzle leaves the lines of cheese that are dispensed with a zig-zag effect. This makes it an excellent choice for children as it can be really fun to see this pattern emerge!

Each tube has 150g of cheese inside. All product information is printed on the reverse side of the tube. Both the original and Cheese and Chive flavours are marked as being suitable for vegetarians. My Cheese and Chive flavour also contains no colours or preservatives and is also suitable for pregnant women. It is also gluten free. Nutritional values are also provided. 35g of the product contains 82 calories and 6.7grams of fat. A helpful daily guidline on recommended daily allowances of calories and fat is also supplied here.

On the tube the brand also have a small notice about their support of the Kavli foundation. This charitable group was created by the son of the company's original founder and now award a share of their profits (ie. from the sale of this cheese) to art projects and important medical research facilities as well as to educators and relief project groups.

Back to the product at hand, Primula cheese has a unique taste and texture that I haven't tasted in any other cheese on the market. Yes, there are copy-cats but they come nowhere near to providing the distinct flavour and texture of Primula. Years ago there used to be a cheese spread called Sun-Pat and that is the nearest a rival has ever gotten to matching the brilliant flavour of Primula!

The Cheese and Chive variety contains real chives which are finely chopped and which seem as though they have been cooked a lot as they have a stringy, soft texture as opposed to being crunchy. The pieces of chive are abundant throughout the cheese and provide a dark green mottled appearance. The smell of the cheese is very strong. It reminds me of when you go to woods in the spring and Ramsons are in flower. It's a sharp, garlic-mushroom aroma that is very mouth-watering.

The creamy cheese flavour is still noticable as a gentle undertone but this cheese is overpoweringly sharp with it's onion-acid flavour. However, the flavour is never too much or too strong or pungent - I think the blend of buttery cheese manages to cool the chive flavour down a little bit.

The Cheese and Chive variety can be used in a multitude of ways. My favourite way to eat this is to simply spread it on toast. I have also used this with mashed potatoes and pasta. It really gives a dish a kick and tastes very sophisticated. On cold items the cheese holds it's shape and will stay in a little sausage after you squeeze it out unless you spread it. On hot foods the cheese will melt though - this has a great effect on pasta as it becomes almost like a sticky sauce. The cheese provides a quick and easy way to cook.

I thoroughly recommend that you discover Primulas tasty range. The brand have also just started making their answer to Philapdelphia style soft cheese. They are now producing a 'Deli' range available and tubes. I have tried the original flavour and I am very impressed by it!

Summary: A tasty cheese by leaders in the market.
